A few failed attempts at small pieces. City taxes are lower and services are better than in unincorp areas, but cities generally can't finance annexation of more sprawl, which is expensive to retrofit and sometimes less politically aligned with the direction cities take by default ("local control")

The County sets the transportation policy - right now there are only 5 county council members. BUT!!! The county charter commission is on your ballot this November! More representation is possible if the candidates who are running for that commission prioritize an amendment to the County Charter!

Right? More inspiring regional leadership could really help.

Meanwhile, public-private partnerships are trying to figure out whether they'll exist or not in six months and are experiencing a rapid decay in trust we've been building for decades. A high price to pay for the ✨giggles✨ you get to have while people wait for you to do your job.

Constraining housing capacity in our state's largest cities is literally paving paradise for unsustainable, new suburbia out here. Just wreckless abandonment of the next generation - all for the sake of boosting their real estate to pay for the retirement they didn't otherwise prepare for.

Downtown Bothell Fire Station 42 is open for folks to charge devices today until 7PM (priority for medical devices). I'm grateful for neighbors checking in on each other and helping out during the extended power outage.

About ten red fish - 'Kokanee,' a non-anadromous, lake-locked sibling of sockeye salmon - swimming upstream in a small, gravelly creek in Sammamish.

Feeling so inspired seeing red Kokanee spawning in a creek near Lake Sammamish today! 🤩

Kirkland tree canopy is 38% and pavement is approximately 30%.

Redmond's tree canopy strategic plan approximated 38% of city land to be forested by tree canopy, while 34% covered by structures and impervious surfaces like pavement.

Bellevue's tree canopy assessment report subdivides impervious surfaces (40% of the city land) by roads (9%), buildings (12%), parking lots (9%), sidewalks (1%), and other (8%). 37% of the city was measured to be covered by tree canopy.

As far as the profession goes, idk how to change the insurance market without really complicated regulation. I'm really interested in how this is dealt with in other countries. Would require an overhaul and may be incompatible with our litigious culture.

Haha step 1: get elected 😂✅ but for real, comp plan policy increasing density maxima in ECAs to offset the cost of reducing risks with expensive engineering; right sizing exemptions from ECAs; 'socialize' engineering by equipping SDCI with qualified staff to run analyses for infill projects; etc

Recovering geo consultant here - SDCI determines reporting reqs by mapped buffers; increasingly difficult for infill/small projects due to small-scale residential Geotech work being disincentivized by insurance market. Expect ~$3k minimum for just a letter documenting whether it actually is an ECA.

Grew up with a backyard creek; I never saw or thought about local spawning until I started working in salmon recovery a few years ago, overcome by awe & emotion about their persistence. It's a transformational experience everyone should see!!
