The full negative effect was achieved on the mixer as Clive attests (and could be mixed variably via a fader lever). The camera tubes used in b/w studios would invert around highlights if overloaded (e.g. shooting at a very bright light) but this was a technical artefact rather than artistic choice.

Just a remnant of the technology of the time. Vision mixers could cut on field 2 but PAL VT edits (whether physical or electronic) would always cut on field 1.

It’s a long time since I did it, but my recollection is that it’s definitely a deliberate effect. Very subtle (arguably too subtle unless they worried people might start fiddling with their horizontal holds!) but too localised, persistent and targeted to be a random fault.

I especially loved the early days (pre-2006) when there were few listeners and it was so lovingly ramshackle, you could barely go a day without an interviewee dropping an F-bomb (with perfunctory presenter apology for any offence) and no-one cared one iota.

Even at the age of 7, Junior Showtime was an absolute last resort if there was nothing on the BBC, it was pissing down outside, no homework to do and you’d read The Beano. And even then, after a dose of Glyn Poole and Bobby Bennett, it would take all weekend to feel clean again.
