All of the reasons Colorado's horrible snowpack is so problematic
Snow showers in this weekβs forecast offer a dose of relief, but they wonβt be enough to get the Colorado out of a tough, dry year.
It's incredibly thin in the high country, and here's a really great analysis on what this dismal #Colorado snowpack could mean down the line. A quintet of @coloradosun.com reporters teamed up to break down concerns across the state. #water #drought

Ordinary people became heroes as flames tore across this eastern Colorado landscape
Farmers and oil field workers responded when prairie fire threatened their Yuma County landscape, as a rural community pulled together.
If you haven't read this wonderful @oliviaprentzel.bsky.social feature yet, put it on your list. #Colorado farmers doing what they do: Protecting their community, even if it means driving tractors 25 mph toward raging wildfire flames to dig fire lines.

How an Air Force captainβs intense training helped prepare for a 104-person, sky-diving world record
In late November, Air Force Capt. Charlene Sufficool was one of 104 skydivers who built the largest parachute canopy formation ever recorded.
We published this story earlier this week & it's still getting a lot of interest from around the country. Capt. Sufficool honed her skills in the skies over #Colorado & the Air Force Academy. Awesome storytelling. (And, yes, the video of the world record is in there!)

Biggest storm of a snow-starved ski season expected to land this weekend
Ski areas limping through the 2025-26 ski season are hoping for big numbers from weekend storm as the next couple weeks look dry and warm
Good info on the upcoming #Colorado snowstorm, but also great history on snowmaking via @jblevinscosun.bsky.social: In 1980, there were about 435 acres blanketed with snowmaking at a handful of CO ski areas; today, 5,800 acres at 23 Colorado ski hills have machine-blown snow. #cowx #skiing

Series of big storms needed to make up huge snow supply gap, Colorado water experts say
Thereβs still winter left, but Colorado experts say the state needs some mega snowstorms to reach an average snowpack and water supply.
We're not at the point of no return for winter ... yet ... but it sure is feeling like it in the #Colorado mountains. It's been a rough and rocky ski and snowboarding season. But we can hope, right? #cowx #weather #snowpack

Amendment to block public funding for road to Colorado luxury community dropped from public lands appropriations bill

Despite effort by #Colorado U.S. Senator @michaelbennet.bsky.social, the potential paved road (still has to get past Eagle County) would see federal support to get to the palatial properties. @jblevinscosun.bsky.social has the latest on a story drawing a lot of attention.

Human DNA found on all four paws of mountain lion that killed hiker in northern Colorado
Larimer County coroner identified Kristen Marie Kovatch, 46, who was hiking in a remote trail south of Glen Haven. Two mountain lions were euthanized by wildlife officials.
Rare event, but no less a tragedy when out in the #Colorado outdoors. Having hiked this trail a few times years ago, including a few times when our oldest son was still in a Kelty baby backpack, it's another reminder of how dangerous it can be venturing out.

A hikerβs deadly fall highlights Coloradoβs longtime struggle to account for its abandoned mines
Colorado has closed about 14,000 abandoned mine openings since 1980, but officials say thousands more β many unknown to the state β remain
Lots of risks around #Colorado high country, but falling in an abandoned mine is not something you really think about out on the trail. Interesting background and numbers on this issue from @oliviaprentzel.bsky.social.

Ash Ghaemiβs quest to get the platform into police departments comes as law enforcement agencies are increasingly relying on AI
There are plenty of stories about the proliferation of #AI, and it is confusing all the ways it could help or hurt us. @oliviaprentzel.bsky.social has the #Colorado story of a man searching for answers and the intersection of police investigations and the fast-moving technology.

Voters in some Colorado communities begin to chafe at taxing tourists to pay for local services
A handful of taxes on skiing, hotels and short-term rentals passed, but some communities rejected plans to raise taxes paid by tourists
Folks in #Colorado mountain communities are making a bit of a shift away from the "tax them, not us" idea when it comes to tourists. As Jason Blevins breaks it down, the need for local businesses that support & encourage tourism to help the tax base is starting to gain a foothold again.

After police used Flock cameras to accuse a Denver woman of theft, she had to prove her own innocence
Chrisanna Elser spent days collecting evidence, from apps on her phone to dashcam footage in her vehicle, to prove her whereabouts
NEW: #Colorado cop sure did think he had everything he needed with #Flock video. But as @oliviaprentzel.bsky.social reports, he was way off base. βWe had to basically exonerate ourselves,β said the falsely accused woman, who never received an explanation from the police or an apology.
