And we call on the prison board to end the enforcement of ICE detainers. Last month, Dauphin County prison honored an ICE detainer, handed over a man to ICE who was sent to Moshannon Detention Center. Five days later, he was dead.

Letter from the Executive Director It is with a heavy heart that I share the breaking news regarding the budget reconciliation bill, which has now passed Congress and is headed to the White House to be signed tomorrow. To put it frankly, this bill is going to lead to countless lives lost and will unleash a level of terror from ICE and Border Patrol this country has never witnessed. This is not just a blow for the immigrant community - it puts everyone in jeopardy. $150 billion dollars a year for the next four years will now be solely allocated to immigration enforcement and will remove the few protections for children, families and asylum seekers that once existed. To put this into context, the budget for the deportation machine will now be larger than most nations' armies - all while providing tax cuts to billionaires and cutting Medicaid and SNAP to communities. I want to acknowledge that this is a bitter moment we find ourselves in, and in the face of such overwhelming news it is human to feel helpless or defeated. Yet, I am constantly reminded through the work PIC members do that we still have power and that we will continue to build more power. Not to hoard resources or hold dominion over others, as this administration has made clear is its goal - but to build power with our people so everyone has what they need and deserve.
I again thank PIC members for all that they do. Thank you to the members who have been fighting so hard to stop this bill; our work was not in vain. Of the two Republican members of Congress to vote ‘no’, one was in Pennsylvania. Thank you to the members who have been calling on our local elected officials and institutions to set politics aside and do what is right and just. Now more than ever we need local leaders to step up and use the full extent of their power to disengage from the deportation machine. I further want to thank PIC members for the many ways they directly supported community members, always pouring from a never full cup. Today is a dark day but like all things, it will pass. We will do what our ancestors have always done: we will fight back. And we will not stop until all of our people can thrive and be free. In solidarity, Jasmine Rivera
