↕️ In Texas, emissions fall significantly by up to 40%. But in the Mid-Atlantic, greater data center flexibility leads to higher CO2 emissions due to lower renewable utilization.

The research was conducted by @knittelmit.bsky.social, Juan Ramon L. Senga and Shen Wang.

⬇️ On average, in the three regional grid locations measured, data center flexibility lowered costs by an average of 3.7 %

⬆️ In systems with high renewable penetration and limited remaining coal capacity, flexibility enables greater renewable usage and emissions reductions.

Data centers flexible with energy use by shifting workload across time, consistently lowers costs + supports both renewable and baseload generators. BUT unlocking the full benefits of flexibility requires coupling it w/ strong renewable energy policies to achieve lower emissions.
