10.03.2025 02:00 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's my first larger project! I've only prepared a couple table runners and a pillow before. I wanted to expand my skills and put something larger together. π
10.03.2025 02:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I definitely get some chem joy out of the hexagons!
09.03.2025 21:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I finished a new quilt project!

Fluorescent chemistree showing different coloured solutions that fluoresce under UV illumination
The fluorescent #chemistree is up & it looks stunning! #FluorescenceFriday We ran a workshop with students making the glowing solutions out of common household substances. From Riboflavin in vitamin B2, chlorophyll from spinach to protoporphyrin IX in brown egg shells. All fluorescing under UV light
06.12.2024 13:04 β π 57 π 15 π¬ 1 π 1A six-panel cartoon titled "real and implied birds". In the two panels in the top row, there's a rough legged-hawk sailing through the sky, next to a smooth legged hawk, which has smooth human legs. In the second row, there's a great-crested flycatcher looking dapper, next to an ok-crested flycatcher that has just a slightly less nice crest. In the third row, there's a mountain chickadee standing up on stones, next to a valley chickadee peeking out from a dip between stones. In the fourth row, there's a least bittern standing in some reeds, next to a most bittern that is enormous and stomping through a city, with people running in fear, helicopters overhead, and an overturned car on fire.
Another thing I made this year: Real and implied birds.

03.12.2024 20:38 β π 46 π 23 π¬ 2 π 0The Supreme Court case tomorrow is fundamentally not about gender affirming care, it's about whether or not trans people have any protections under the 14th amendment. A loss in this case would greenlight a torrent of explicitly discriminatory legislation without much, if any judicial recourse.
04.12.2024 00:16 β π 3325 π 849 π¬ 47 π 46Oh damn! That's wild! My advisor told a horror story of his grad school experience where another grad student set a still on fire in the Cotton lab. He was then kicked out of the lab and apparently left chemistry altogether.

The conventional explanation for food desertsβthat these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining β fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didnβt used to exist.
