I’ve been getting them too — all gushing praise for a book that isn’t one of mine. Mostly the person loves it so much because of its [list of qualities] and wants to help it reach a wider audience, but one purported to be from a book club — and those details didn’t match with the actual club’s info.

Ooooh, nicely played, latest emailer. A gracious and complimentary reply followed by a “do you happen to be a writer, you have to tone of one” when my books and website and social media are probably still the most likely to show up under a search.

Sorry, no budget for promotion.

Ok, I’ll start watching the game. Usually that brings about a result within 5-10 minutes. No guarantees what the result will be.

My dad, putting his popcorn b/n us at a movie theater & then leaning over to say in an unintentionally ominous way: “Feed deep.”

My mom, annoyed at a Huckabee on TV: “He should stick his head in a bucket because that’s just crap.”

makes me weep to think of the gifts robbed from us because unaffordable housing has made it difficult for people to pursue their passions and hobbies

And your point is absolutely right — how many times have we heard it said that “we can’t know what’s in his heart or what his intent was” when it comes to racist things he’s said or misogynistic behaviors or lies, so they can’t be called those things directly? So, so many.

So many years into this and people still don’t get that he doesn’t make jokes. What he says might make people uncomfortable so they laugh as a kind of shocked/astonished automatic response, but that does not mean it was a joke.

If I were running the DNC, there would be Democratic Party sponsored food relief banks across the country right now that specifically welcomed anyone regardless of party affiliation.

Along with the food, there could be voter registration and links to runforsomething.net

Shouting into the void here but in general, if an article is interesting enough to post a screenshot of, it's interesting enough to post a link to so the people you're sharing with can actually read it, tell who wrote it and where it's from, assess its credibility, etc.

Over the past week, the president said the DOJ should pay him a quarter billion dollars, bulldozed half the White House to build himself a gaudy ballroom, bragged about murdering civilians in international waters, pardoned some more criminals, directed federal prosecutors to indict his opponents ...

And it feels…empowering? thrilling? that one of the best “weapons” seems to be whimsy and humor — being good-natured while angry. By not conforming in benignly outlandish ways. By making *fun* of the forces that are covering their inner weakness w/ outward shows of “strength.”

I’ll sound like a hippy/New Ager but it should be said: Much of Oregon has such good energy.

I’ve lived in Ashland twice, which I suspect is some sort of necessary component to PDX — a place where new Portlanders are formed and more established ones go to retire or just recharge for a time.

This is possibly the same energy that Portland intensified—the inflatables, the naked bike ride. There were always humorous signs but Portland dialed up the “everyone is a misfit at heart and that’s our superpower; evil will never understand us,” and a depressed nation began to know itself again.

Oh, yes — people working to do good and succeeding, with bad people not only being stopped in that instance but generally being made unable to do future bad? So very nice.

Absolutely. I joined an established, regional “we just want to make friends” online group tonight, mentioned my grieving process plus few of my current, built-up anxieties/phobias in my intro post — and had several people immediately say “ohh, me too, I feel that, I have similar issues.” 😳😵‍💫😭

I’ve been watching these on repeat this year — not just because they’re fun, but because I’m having the most difficult and lonely year I’ll ever have and the “wisecracking misfits find togetherness and ways to use their unusual skills to do good” fills a very specific need. (Which a lot of us have.)
