• Supporting climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture.
• Protecting smallholder incomes while ensuring fair prices for consumers.

• Reducing food waste across supply chains.
• Strengthening women’s economic participation and leadership in agrifood systems.

Cooperatives contribute to the achievement of SDG2 by:
• Stabilising food supply through collective production, storage, and processing.
• Improving access to affordable, nutritious food via consumer-owned retail.

The latest Policy Brief on Cooperative Contributions to SDG 2: Zero Hunger, developed by the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) and the ICA, highlights how cooperatives are already delivering food security solutions on the ground.

They strengthen farmers’ bargaining power, reduce post-harvest losses, stabilise supply, and keep value anchored in communities, prioritising long-term food security over short-term profit.

As locally rooted, member-owned enterprises, cooperatives tackle the structural failures that drive hunger.

Conflict, climate shocks, volatile food prices, and deep power imbalances across agrifood value chains continue to undermine access to healthy, affordable food, especially for women, children, and low-income households.

This is where cooperatives make a difference.

In 2024, 673 million people experienced hunger, and 2.3 billion faced moderate or severe food insecurity.

With just four years left to reach SDG 2, hunger remains dangerously off track, driven by conflict, climate shocks, volatile prices, and unequal food systems that leave producers and consumers with little power.
