The idea of “adapt or die” is toxic, and is aligned with the white supremacist notions of “binary thinking, perfectionism, and worship of the written word.” Instead, I ask, can we imagine and work towards other futures besides one escribed by capital?
To attempt to encapsulate all of what I’ve discussed today, and more discussion in the article regarding facial recognition, environmental harms, and researchers to keep an eye on: I think that we “should refuse generative AI because it is a ‘destructive force’ that is infrastructurally racist, marketed as a solution to increasing socioeconomic disparity while gleefully scraping all possible traces of digital and digitized labor…[it] does not magically produce information with integrity without requiring further human scrutinization, and creates an unnecessary excess of energy emissions that is detrimental to our ecosystem” (p. 601).

Dear UC Regents, As faculty members of University of California law schools, we urge you to reject the draft agreement with the Trump administration that you made public on October 24. This draft agreement would strike a grave blow to the autonomy of the University of California and the freedom of its faculty and students to pursue knowledge and exercise their First Amendment rights. It would require UCLA to discriminate against some of its own students in violation of California law; to cease its legal and genuinely important efforts to build a university community open to all Californians including those from disadvantaged backgrounds; and to curtail the rights of students, faculty, and staff to speak freely, teach, and learn. It would require UCLA— or more accurately, the state of California to pay the federal government an enormous sum in disregard of the procedures required by law. Such funds could be better spent on funding research directly and building a foundation for greater financial security for the UC System that includes more protection from illegal federal conduct. In contrast, by acceding to illegal threats, the university would become complicit in the Trump Administration's efforts to undermine the rule of law and the values of liberty, equality, and democracy enshrined in the Constitution. And all this for what? The federal government promises nothing in return. To restore canceled grants that have already been restored by federal court order. To release all spurious claims against UCLA, but with no promise whatsoever that the federal government will not try again to penalize UCLA— for instance by once again unlawfully cancelling federal grants that UCLA researchers have earned on the academic merits-the next time the Trump administration decides to do so. Instead, the draft agreement contains novel and highly intrusive monitoring and surveillance provisions that appear designed to give the federal government new pretexts for continuing oversight a…
