AOC came out swinging against age verification legislation and somehow the entire tech press seems to not have noticed?

On my way to @brick-mortar.bsky.social to sign pre-orders of BUTTERFLY EFFECTS! Get yours in now if you want one.
Like, now-now. I will sign your book.
Basically, take the amount of money you think your favorite author gets, halve it, and then halve it again, and you have a number that's probably a lot closer to their actual earnings from writing.
"But I don't think they make that much!"
Halve that. Halve it again.
Speaking of next week, Seattlites can come watch me and @seananmcguire.bsky.social talk books!

Cis people need to pay attention to the way they communicate this. They freely admit that after all of their research, they came up with zero evidence that HRT was harmful.
Then they banned it anyway, claiming their inability to find a reason is a reason in of itself.
Vinay Prasad got booted for the second time. He used unsupported data from VAERS as a basis for restricting use of the Covid mRNA vaccine, overriding real experts.
Kennedy's video showing off working out in denim doesn't hide the glaring chaos & instability that is HHS.

ARCs are generally bad library donations. They aren't made to stand up to repeat reads the way finished books are.

A little light reading for this evening. Many thanks to @seananmcguire.bsky.social. Absolutely no spoilers will be posted here.
Also anyone that got a copy at ECCC and immediately put it up on eBay should be ashamed of themselves.
btw about that pixar thing, the reason why these people think having a conversation about gay people with kids is difficult is because they don't know a way to say to their kid "gay people are normal but you are not allowed to be one" without sounding like a bigot (there is a reason for that)

Just wait until the book has been released. Then there's not the concern that someone who desperately wants to read it will buy and read a book instead, plot details are public, and you're not being a jerk. Sell it as a collectable, not an early-access experience.

08.03.2026 12:21 β π 286 π 49 π¬ 0 π 2To be very clear, selling an ARC you legitimately own is bad form and kinda shitty if you do it before the book is released, but it's never piracy. You have the legal right to do it at any time.
08.03.2026 04:26 β π 10 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Yup!
08.03.2026 04:02 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Baen is selling them directly, and that's very different than buying a print ARC on the secondary market.
08.03.2026 04:02 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I never give anyone dirty looks for bringing me ARCs to sign. I have no idea where they came from.
08.03.2026 02:38 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0No one should be selling ARCs, period. But someone selling the ARC after the book is out is likely to be asking for less money, and hence doing less potential harm.

Selling ARCs hurts everyone involved in making the book happen--AND it's a dick move. Please don't be an asshole about us trying to give you fun, free, cool shit.
Don't buy or sell advance reader copies.
The doctrine of first sale means you can't be legally punished for selling an ARC, and if you just picked it up at a con, it's not like the publisher can track it back to you. But the author doesn't get paid. The resale is invisible in a way that ARCs for promo uses are not.
08.03.2026 01:45 β π 80 π 8 π¬ 1 π 02. If you're able to acquire an ARC, remember that "not for resale" is on the cover for a reason, and please, please, do not sell it. Selling ARCs is what leads publishers to reduce and reduce their print runs: we're going to wind up all-virtual if people don't cut it out.
