Equinor pulling back CCS spending until market improves Norwegian company is a CCS pioneer but markets are developing slower than expected

Who could have seen this coming?

Carbon capture was never the plan, it was the comfort blanket: โ€œDonโ€™t worry, weโ€™ll fix it later".

A story to delay real cuts while drilling rolls on.

When the industry feels powerful & secure, the fairy tale goes back on the shelf.

Wildfire Fighters, Unmasked in Toxic Smoke, Are Getting Sick and Dying

Iโ€™d assumed wildfire fighters all wore respirators. Iโ€™m shocked. The Forest Service needs to make this right.

โ€œInternal records, studies and interviews with current and former agency officials reveal another motivation: Embracing masks would mean admitting how dangerous wildfire smoke really is.โ€

The history of the ocean, as told by tiny beautiful fossils Bountiful remains of foraminifera reveal how organisms responded to climate disturbances of the past. They can help predict the future, too.

Pretty cool to get interviewed for this with a bunch of people I respect:

Totally agree. But itโ€™s what most scientists I know are most scared of. Iโ€™ve looked at agriculture projections for the Midwest, and while the uncertainty is massive, people deserve to know that even the lower range (of crop losses) would be scary. Issues with uncertainty shouldnโ€™t mean we avoid it.

I rarely see public communications about projections for water/food scarcity in specific regions. Maybe because itโ€™s deemed too scary or uncertain by news outlets. But, I have an inkling that showing projected ranges of loss would inspire more passion/action than pretty much anything else.

"Making people aware that their pro-climate view is, in fact, by far the majority could unlock a social tipping point and push leaders into the climate action so urgently needed."

The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nationโ€™s weather instrumentation network (among many others).

Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayerโ€”equivalent to a single cup of coffeeโ€”and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....

Npj Climate Action, 3(1), 81. Abstract We argue that Bรผntgenโ€™s (2024) claim that climate science must be separated from activism is fundamentally flawed. Activism does not inherently lead to biased science and striving for value-free science is both unattainable and undesirable.

Grim: Trumpโ€™s executive orders will include withdrawing the US from the Paris Agreement (again!), eliminating every office in every federal agency working to end the pollution that disproportionately affects poor communities, and allowing more drilling and mining on public lands.

I saw Mark Jacobson, a professor at Stanford, give a great talk about the illegitimacy of carbon capture at AGU. The conversation around net zero and the use of carbon capture got pretty heated, and he was very adamant that it was all greenwashing. Maybe another good person to talk to!

Columbia is a far different place today than it was in the spring of 1968 when protesters took over University buildings amid discontent about the Vietnam War, racism and the University's proposed expansion into Morningside Park. After a weeklong standoff, New York City Police stormed the campus and arrested more than 700 people. The fallout dogged Columbia for years.

It took decades for the University to recover from those turbulent times. Columbia now has one of the most socio-economically diverse student bodies among its peer institutions. It has added a new campus designed to be open to the community and pursues fields of inquiry unheard of a half-century ago. Columbia is commemorating the 50th anniversary of those long-ago events with a deep dive of scholarship and exhibits chronicling what happened then and its effects today.
