Last week I did something really scary β€” I presented an incredibly personal and vulnerable essay in front of a live public audience πŸ˜… If you missed it, here's a link to the essay, including a video of the reading!

"Anger and depression and sorrow are beautiful things in a story, but they’re like poison to the filmmaker or artist. They’re like a vise grip on creativity. If you’re in that grip, you can hardly get out of bed, much less experience the flow of creativity and ideas.”
β€” David Lynch

Recommendations for a Freeze-Wave It’s been cold here in New York City. Very cold. Mostly staying inside. Watching some stuff.

It's cold out there. Like, really cold. What are you all watching / reading / playing to pass the time?

the best encryption in the world can be broken in an instant by a snitch! technology can’t save you from the simple fact that the easiest & most common way cops find out what was said in private is not hacking or warrants or subpoenas, it’s somebody straight up telling them!!

In a move right out of the β€œdirected by Paul Verhoven” playbook, and most memorable for a child of my age, was the onslaught of children’s toys: highlights of which include military action figures, comics, plastic life-sized β€œDesert Storm action rifles,” and even TOPPS trading cards.

Community sport games involved the ritualistic hanging of β€œyellow-ribbons for the troops,” and the collective singing of Patriotic songs. Parades were awash with desert style camouflage and military vehicles. Who can forget the Operation Desert Storm cookbook.

It’s difficult to communicate to a (younger) modern audience just how impossible it felt to escape. Breaking news stories were on every channel. If someone had cable (a rare thing at the time), there were entire networks like CNN seemingly dedicated to continuous Gulf War updates.

Watching LESSONS OF DARKNESS (1992) gave me chills. As I discussed in my article You Are All Wrong, it is a near perfect meditation on the crimes of war. LESSONS evoked memories of being a child during the Gulf War; it was my first time experiencing a war completely dominate the American Culture.

🍷 You Are All Wrong. Defending Herzog’s Ecstatic Truth at New York’s Metrograph Theater.

"Documentary film is often misunderstood as a work of non-fiction used to disclose factual stories. This definition is too limiting: documentary, while often synonymous with non-fiction, should be viewed as a framework, not a dogma..."
