Senate plan would spend $254M to improve reading scores, raise Oklahoma teacher pay β€’ Oklahoma Voice Oklahoma Senate leadership proposed adding $254 million in education funding by redirecting extra money going to teacher pensions.

β€œA significant number of people receiving these credits are folks who make 5 times Oklahoma’s average wages,” said Senate Minority Leader Julia Kirt. β€œAnd for us to talk about increasing it by another $25 million is deeply troubling.”

It’s good to see the majority party prioritize reading, teacher salaries, and getting more teachers in the pipeline, but these are disjointed initiatives, not a long-term plan for student success.

Oklahoma legislative leaders aligned on property tax elimination impact Oklahoma lawmakers discussed State Question 843 proposing property tax elimination on primary residences, raising concerns about school and public safety funding.

A zero-based property tax or huge cuts in property taxes would undermine public safety,
& our local schools. It’s a primary driver of local development. I’m deeply concerned that now there’s going to be a compromise that’s going to include that.

Community leaders address affordable housing shortage and homelessness Oklahoma City leaders discuss rising housing costs, homelessness, and new legislation to increase affordable housing through tax credits and public-private partnerships.

My SB1393 would improve neighborhoods and downtown areas by stimulating conversion of buildings into housing that people can afford. Those properties are already connected to city infrastructure, so they have great advantages for cost-effective redevelopment.

We have property tax relief for very low-income folks. We could increase that limit.

I'm already hearing that people are going to
compromise to the position of cutting property tax when it's unreasonable. Do Oklahomans still want public
safety? Do they still want bridges & roads, public schools?

How will the legislative session impact Oklahomans at the ballot box? Several bills filed this year address topics like early voting, meetings of public bodies and what makes someone qualified to run for office.

Voting should be consistent across all elections. I’m pleased this article features my bill that would make full days on Saturday regular early voting times for all elections.
