It shows how many then-modern 155 mm artillery shells are needed to equal the effect of a nuclear artillery shell with a yield of 1 kilotons. For troops in open, 75 then-modern (but by 2025 badly outdated) ICM cluster munitions equal the effect of a nuclear shell; for troops in tanks, 750 ordinary High Explosive (HE) and White Phosphorus (WP) shells are needed for the same effect.

A 5-10 kt shell from 203 mm howitzer could defeat artillery batteries, tank companies (10 tanks), divisional HQs, or infantry companies (100-150 men) A 1-100 kt warhead of a Lance missile could defeat entire battalions (3 companies or artillery batteries), air defence companies, or helicopter companies, in addition to destroying bridges, supply dumps and important road/rail intersections. Tactical aviation using free-fall nuclear bombs or missiles could destroy any of the targets listed.
