So sometimes you have words that are written with the kanjis that best express the meaning of the words (not a rule, but sometimes it happens), but you read them in a different way than you would if they were alone. Because the focus is on the meaning in this case, not the sound.

I think you should understand kanji more like a symbol that expresses a meaning/idea, instead of character saver. Sometimes you want to express the meaning instead of just the sound, that's why some japanese names that sound the same can be written with different kanji depending on the meaning.
