08.02.2025 07:26 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Back in the ‘60s, when I was a Barnard undergrad, there was a Columbia song:”Who owns New York? Oh, who owns New York? Oh, who owns New York, the people say. Oh, we own New York, we own New York! who? C-O-L-U-M-B-I-A!” It was barely funny then, and now…..

19.12.2024 20:26 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0More crankiness: posts are all jumbled together. I don’t see, as I do on Facebook, a continuous conversation. It’s like being in a room full of people simultaneously soliloquizing.

Dept.in 1979, around the time of a shift in the terms of MCPS membership for Department faculty, & later the shift in the center of gravity from physics to biology & the focus on pluralism. It was interesting to be around for that.

28.11.2024 00:43 — 👍 5 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The situation is so overwhelmingly awful that the temptation is strong to retreat into one’s own space, for those of us fortunate enough to have that option. Or even just to feel immobilized, despairing, exhausted. What will these times call on us to do? Will we—will I—be up to it?

I am, of course, terrified about what will happen to this country and the world; but focusing specifically on myself, I don’t think I’m in real danger. I want to think about what those who are relatively safe do have to fear—namely, becoming (or realizing we’ve been) “good Germans”.
