I suppose with Miller the modern version is no longer modernising and civilising the ‘savage’ through oppression, but obliterating them with bombs, since they would do the same to us, if they had a chance. We must act first. They are, after all, ‘savages’

If Caroline Elkins’ book, Legacy of Violence, means anything, it’s that the practice of systemic, unspeakable violence comes draped in the language of Enlightenment values, which must be forced on the savages to make them human, like us. And I can concede that it may be the preponderance of Western sources on BlueSky but I’m seeing a lot of reporting on European immigrants who are stuck in the Gulf. But there are thousands if not tens of thousands of ordinary people from the global majority who are especially stuck.
