I can now officially say I've completed data collection for my PhD! Ending it with 76 participants for my eye-tracking experiment.
A lot of eyeballs and organisation in the making. A momentary sigh of relief before onto the next stage, analysis time!
Treated to the views thanks to Glasgow.
It was lovely to present my work amongst such a supportive group of researchers, and to also hear about the exciting work going on across the spectrum of language variation and change. Thanks again to the organisers for a fantastic time!

I presented my research that looked at using large-scale corpora and real-time methods to model non-linear trajectories of sound change, and explore any social relevance for these significant timepoints of change. (1)
Just back from #UKLVC15 in Lancaster. Huge thank you to the organising committee (special shout-out to Claire Nance!) who managed to make it relaxed, relevant and rigorous, all at once. Fab conference.

Another day, another eyeball.
Very grateful to my wonderful guinea pigs who have tested out my various experiments. Excited for what's to come over the next few months! π
A different break away from the PhD this Easter, in the form of trekking the Sahara and tagine in the Atlas mountains. It was great to make new friends & to turn off for a while.
Now feeling rested and ready to get back to my research, armed with my Moroccan mint tea!
Some updates for 2025 β¨
- Had a blast presenting my research on language use in the media, at the ELL Seminar (University of Glasgow). πΊ
- Systems are go with my eye tracking experiment. Nothing went 'boom', and pulled through some really nice data to make sure everything is behaving.
Phew! π
She's always close by keeping an eye on it all!

Ended on a high with getting my pilot eye-tracking study off the ground today! This included all my 'spliced & diced' speaker stimuli, and extracted time points for the gaze analysis π Excited for the break with loved ones βοΈ

More importantly, it was great to be present amongst many other researchers and activists - and the discussion on the future of Ulster and Scotland languages.
It was so great that I'll nearly forgive you, Belfast, for the excessive turbulence on a teeny propeller plane βοΈ
Had a fantastic weekend in Belfast, at the Forum for Research on the Languages of Scotland and Ulster FRLSU2024.
I'm very grateful to FRLSU for awarding me the student bursary award - without which it would not have been possible to present my work on mediated linguistic prejudices.
