This is without, as you rightly say, any pretence of generating a "precise" mark for an individual viva, but using a coarse-grained rubric and many individual points of assessment.

Perhaps not everyone would think of it as a "viva", but we do about 200 every Wednesday morning in our department. A small battalion of well-trained GTAs do much of our Y2 lab assessment that way.

Particularly annoying were the ones where bits of chemical structures were included, but you had to fill in other bits. That did not promote cognition, but rather a laser-focus in whether you'd got that stereocentre right, or caught the other deprotection on the C ring of whogivesafuckamicin.
