Anyone can fall, it just takes them hitting the right moment when you're not on guard.
And they rely on that feeling of shame to keep people quiet.
It really can happen to anyone.
You do, you deserve a fabulous birthday where you feel celebrated and special.

Well I'm in a lot of danger, but so worth it.
Perhaps aspirational, but I like Ben, he's sweet

09.08.2025 05:32 — 👍 17 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Of the people I know here who are agreeing with me, most of them have PhDs.
No one is derriding them, it's a big achievement that takes a fuck ton of effort.
But it's not a measure of intelligence.
Realising I still have a werid anger reaction over some of the covid lockdown stuff.
It was absolutely the right thing to do.
And I had it about as easy as anyone could.
But I don't think I've let go the complaints about restrictions elsewhere when Tāmaki was in lockdown for months.
I think there is a lot of this. I mean, academically I know that it was awful, but it's hard to comprehend.
Where as that last Auckland lockdown was hard and I know it affected me.
Nothing like the overseas trauma, but I didn't experience that, so even though I know, sometimes it doesn't feel.
That sounds like a problem for later you really. Not a now you problem
09.08.2025 01:29 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Friend of mind was a DocPhil because for whatever historical reason Oxford absolutely does not do PhD.
Apparently that bit of Latin is not okay.
I'm glad you do, it's really working for you and I think we all need that bit of brightness at this time of year
09.08.2025 01:25 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Ons thing that's really bugging me about the "PhD level intelligence" is that a PhD isn't a measure of intelligence, it's a measure of commitment to study and specialisation in a narrow field (and opportunity to do so).
"PhD level intelligence" isn't really a meaningful phrase
The blonde is really popping on you, and you look stunning.
I'm glad you're feeling the vibes, I hope you can move to the music.
Oh, I'm an idiot, specifically 1980
I mean it wouldn't be everyone's choice, but I like whip it
But then again, can we really say 80s without Madonna?
09.08.2025 00:08 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0And now my brain is going to land of confusion, but there are so many good options.
Look, you know I'm bad at choosing
There are so many good options, but for some reason this is the one that immediately jumped into my head
08.08.2025 23:59 — 👍 6 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Trying to build everything in excel is a total footgun, but I think a lot of programmers would benefit from understanding what you can build to provide an escape hatch for certain use cases.
08.08.2025 23:28 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Like it's never a "I can build anything" machine, and it need to have a constrained space, but the ability for people who can think in a structured way but aren't programmers to do a basic integration between two systems is powrful.
08.08.2025 23:27 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I'm strongly of the opinion that low code stuff has its place, but the important thing is understanding that place.
The software around it needs to be providing the safety so the no code is empowering people to manage a constrained problem rather than a foot gun.
Like it's good to explore the tech and all, and know what's out there, but so often it's a distraction.
I find the innovation tokens metaphor useful for getting people focusing on where they spend their effort.
Can't remember if I've sent you boringtechnology.club before.
It's often referenced at my work and one of my go to.
There are plenty of us that focus more on solving the problem than shiny.
We just do less conference talks I think
More libraries is the way to address the accessibility of it and they're getting there.
