Whatโ€™s the deal with academic โ€œlightning talksโ€ that last 10 minutes no time for questions? Where are we rushing? Why are we packing so much into so little time in a conference? I prefer talks that last 30-40 minutes plus a round of questions. We need time to digest, reflect, and discuss.

Thank you for the essay recommendation! I also think itโ€™s an interesting philosophical discussion but it is so tired as an argument.

My native language doesnโ€™t have articles (a, the), and I will probably never learn to use them correctly in English. I know the rules, I just canโ€™t seem to be able to apply them.

This movie completely is a point of view of a white upper class man. I also didnโ€™t understand what message about revolutionaries he planned to convey.

Checked academic job listings today and decided to spare more from my current salary. Looks like high time to get some new skills.

This morning thoughts are sponsored by random (Russian?) drones stopping flight traffic over Copenhagen last night. Are we already in the war or do we have a few months (years) of doing our silly little jobs before the shit hits the fan? Hard to say.

I can't believe I need to have an AI policy! I made it pretty short though: Using AI is cheating, yourself mostly. In addition to the environmental blight created by AI, it makes no sense to use it in your intellectual and creative work. Why would you outsource your innate intelligence?

An observation from recent conferences: researchers should be more ashamed of using AI-generated illustrations in their presentations.

The paradox of GenAI is that it feels useful only if you donโ€™t know much about the subject. The moment you start checking it, you realize it is completely useless. It is actually faster to do work without it.

Funny part about academia is that you canโ€™t really get mad at your job application rejection because they most likely hired one of your friends.

The first thing I do as a reviewer now is checking whether all references are real. I perceive it as a shortcut, as it gives a good idea of the overall quality of the submission and integrity of the researcher.

Just voted in the Norwegian national elections for the first time (got my citizenship in 2022). Itโ€™s pretty great to feel that your vote counts, to read all the partiesโ€™ programs, to compare policy suggestions. Democracy takes a lot of mental work, but it is very empowering to have a voice.

The problem is Putin might be interested in just prolonging the war rather than winning it. Because then heโ€™ll need a new target and more resources. For now he can slowly milk the country while staying in power.

On Reliable Algorithmic Absence-Based Inference

While I was on a holiday in Norway, my first article from the postdoc project ABSENCE was published in Philosophy and Technology. Here I discuss the potential application of absence-based inference in algorithmic decision-making.
