Zhang Mingquan’s eyes are barely open, but they still widen when Ruolai takes aim. A breath passes his lips, the beginning of a scream. “Wait—” he gasps. The bullet goes through his head. The entire pile of him shudders, then stills. Tunan sighs. “You’ve always been too kind,” he says. But he makes a sound, pleased, when Ruolai draws him in ferocious and hungry, and he wastes no time in returning the kiss with the same hunger. Ruolai drops the gun in the pool of spreading blood, and clutches Tunan’s shoulders, and begins his feast.

Alas, the job is already taken, and I feel his life must be SO WEIRD.

Production quality was fine, I think! Direction was, uh, I could kind of see what they were going for? It just wasn't super fun to watch. And I'm not very familiar with Bai Lu, but the role seemed a good fit for her. Wang Xingyue seemed wasted in this, alas.

Oh and lastly, the way visual effects were used was SUPER uneven? It didn't really affect the overall quality for me, but the first episode sets up a CGI-heavy romp and then most of the drama is a normal whodunnit with social commentary? Bit weird!

I should deduct more points for how dour it all seemed, apart from brief moments of joy, but the absolute trust and understanding between the main couple was so good, and the writing was so solid throughout, I guess it's gonna be a 9. (2FL was awesome and 2ML was rubbish, so ignoring them.)

The role of the emperor was fascinating, with the story explicitly condemning the immense power he holds, where usually it would just imply that this is all fucked up. I don't know, I'm not an expert at all, it just felt novel to me.

I wish the leads had been allowed to smile more.

Done! Have to say, bit of a conundrum. It's not a fun romp? The romance seems incidental, and the leads seem depressed for most of the story. To me it read like one of those 74 ep court politics dramas that I don't watch because there are no kissies. But also? I want to give this? 9 stars?

Imagine being the person whose job it is to set dimly lit footage of Zhang Kangle's bare torso to gentle music. Like, accompanying your boss to Europe so you can edit slo-mo shots of his abs. Make sure his face looks exquisite.

I guess someone's gotta do it.
