In severe cases, complications can include:
- An abscess
- A blockage of the bowel
- A hole in the bowel.

In people over 50, acute diverticulitis is more common in women. In those under 50, it is more common in men. But more people are being diagnosed, especially those under the age of 45.

Alice was only 14 when her body told her something was wrong. Exhausted, she bounced between constant diarrhoea & constipation, missing school regularly. She learned to live with dismissal & push through worsening symptoms. Until her health collapsed.

The chronic form is uncommon and many of the symptoms are also caused by other, less serious conditions.

With the acute form, diagnosis is also tough as there is no simple bedside test.

Bowel ischaemia is a difficult condition for doctors to diagnose and treat. 🩺

The NHS estimates this change to the home-testing FIT test could help detect around 600 more bowel cancers early each year and find 2,000 more people with high-risk polyps in their bowel, allowing patients to have preventative surgery.

Funded by Bowel Research UK and supported by the Imperial and Cambridge NIHR Biomedical Research Centres, this study means patients can be reassured that current treatments work equally well for both ethnic groups.
