As an atheist, I also love the portrayal of spirits and the afterlife in the show and how spiritual some of the characters can be.

-then I think you're definitely losing the plot of the whole series. It isn't about them being demons but more the fact that they're tragic humans that lost their morality out of their control and only remembers everything once they're dying.

Which means you lose your memories of when you were human along with your morality. If you don't succumb to the hunger and eat people you're less likely to lose your humanity (eg, Tamayo and Nezuko). So if you think Tanjiro sympathizes with the dying demons because he thinks they're just like Nezuko

It's because Tanjiro has compassion for the humanity lost by being a demon. Because you gotta realize good people get turned into demons in the series by Muzan - some he manipulated into turning. These good people will eventually have to eat to survive but doing so makes you lose your humanity.

In demon slayer, the author tend to give some demons a sad backstory. I always cry when it's sad or bittersweet.

I feel like some people don't understand why Tanjiro feels for these demons though. He's not just feeling empathy because it reminds him of his sister.
