At that moment there was a knock on the door, and Sam came in. He ran to Frodo and took his left hand, awkwardly and shyly. He stroked it gently and then he blushed and turned hastily away.

"It's warm!" said Sam. "Meaning your hand, Mr. Frodo. It has felt so cold through the long nights. But glory and trumpets!" he cried, turning round again with shining eyes and dancing on the floor. "It's fine to see you up and yourself again, sir!"

Sam was left alone. Wearily, as the evening of the Nameless Land fell upon the place of battle, he crawled back to his master. "Master, dear master," he said, but Frodo did not speak.

They stood now; and Sam still holding his master’s hand caressed it. He sighed. ‘What a tale we have been in, Mr. Frodo, haven’t we?’ he said. ‘I wish I could hear it told! Do you think they’ll say: Now comes the story of Nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom?’

"You still mean to come with me?"

"I do."

"It is going to be very dangerous, Sam. It is already dangerous. Most likely neither of us will come back."

"If you don't come back, sir, then I shan't, that's certain," said Sam.

CLOSE ON: FRODO hyperventilates and continues clutching the RING as it tries to take him and respond to the calls of the WRAITHS. SAM grabs Frodo’s hand and shakes him.

SAM: Mr. Frodo! It’s alright. I’m here.

SAM holds FRODO close and weeps.

FRODO WINCES with a sharp GASP of PAIN ... He puts the PEN down and CLUTCHES at his SHOULDER...

SAM has entered the ROOM and stands BEHIND FRODO...

SAM: (concerned) What is it?

FRODO: Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam.

SAM: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn’t make fun. I was being serious.

FRODO: (smiling) So was I

"Do not be too sad, Sam. You cannot be always torn in two. You will have to be one and whole, for many years. You have so much to enjoy and to be, and to do."

"Good-bye, master, my dear...Forgive your Sam. He'll come back to this spot when the job's done- if he manages it. And then he'll not leave you again. Rest you quiet till I come...And if the Lady could hear me and give me one wish, I would wish to come back and find you again"

FRODO: I do. I must. I will go with Sam

ANGLE ON: SAM and FRODO sit alone in a storage area.
SAM
(whispers)
We have to get out of here. You go.
Go, now.
ANGLE ON: FRODO looks to SAM, warily. SAM crawls over to him.

"Very well, Sam. If you wish to go, I'll come," said Frodo

They had taken Frodo’s body. They were off. He could not catch them up. Still he laboured on.

Sam spoke into Frodo's ear all that he could find words for of Gollum's treacherous attack, the horror of Shelob, and his own adventures with the orcs. When he had finished, Frodo said nothing but took Sam's hand and pressed it

Sam went to him and kissed his hand.

That night they camped on a small eyot close to the western bank. Sam lay rolled in blankets beside Frodo.

"if you will believe it, he's now one of the most famous people in all the lands, and they are making songs about his deeds from here to the Sea and beyond the Great River." Sam blushed, but he looked gratefully at Frodo

ANGLES ON: FRODO turns and runs right into a GONDORIAN RANGER,
who grabs hold of him...SAM draws his weapon and charges the
RANGER, but another comes out of the trees and knocks him onto
his back...the RANGER with FRODO lifts him briefly and tosses
him to the ground.

SAM desperately reaches for him ... FRODO is too far down.

SAM: Give me your hand.

CLOSE ON: FRODO looks at SAM, his face impassive.

SAM (cont’d): Take my hand!

"But," said Sam, and tears started in his eyes, "I thought you were going to enjoy the Shire, too. for years and years"

SAM: Frodo!

‘I do,’ said Frodo. ‘I will go with Sam.’
