Our latest Tumblr remembers influential Deep Ecologist & Buddhist Joanna Macy who died a month ago. We link her 'Climate Crisis as a Spiritual Path' talk from a 2021 interview, to help us better sense how we can live our lives fully with inner peace & courage (even joy) as the world destroys itself

A slide with cartoons as bullet points.
The title says
White Supremacy Culture Bonus Round:
Internalized Capitalism

On the left the four pieces of information going down read
Self-worth is tied to productivity /work (Next to a black woman with multiple arms juggling tasks sitting in front of a laptop computer)
Work/ productivity before Health (Next to a medical chart and stethoscope)
Staying busy to avoid other needs (Next to a person at a desk anxious with a pile of papers and typing on a computer the clock behind them displaying a late hour)
Feeling lazy when sick / taking time off (next to a person with a cold compress sitting in bed holding a cup of tea)

On the right side:
Feeling guilt when resting/ not “doing” (next to a woman in an armchair with her legs draped over an arm while she is reading with a stack of books on the floor.)
Belief that hard work = happiness (next to a person with a fist raised in success surrounded by gold starts)
Activities must be profitable to be worthwhile (next to a person with long hair sitting on a throne of money)

The sides of the slide are bordered by a column gold coins with dollar signs on them

Honey Bees Learn to Fight Deadly Varroa Mites In the face of colony collapse, some beekeepers are foregoing insecticides and opting instead to breed bees with mite-resistant behaviors.

Since the mid 90s, researchers and beekeepers have seen mite resistance in wild and domestic bee populations. More recently, scientists have linked it to a set of behaviors collectively known as Varroa Sensitive Hygiene.

When one meditates the goal is to facilitate brainwaves like alpha, theta, gamma etc.

Experienced Buddhist monks can hit insane gamma level that scientists once though to be impossible.

The monks proved them wrong. 😍

Graphs showing 4 recent extreme heatwaves the last years in North America, Europe, South America, and South Africa that exceeded by a large margin previous events.

Daily maximum temperature anomalies during recent record-breaking heatwaves and their temporal context. (A) 2-m daily maximum temperature (Tx) anomaly fields averaged over the 2021 Pacific Northwest heatwave in North America. Regions where values were record-breaking (since 1950) during the indicated time period are hatched. (B) Time series for the years 1950 to 2023 of the hottest annual average Tx anomaly over the region indicated by the box in A (relative to 1981 to 2010 June–August). The record-breaking values of regional-mean Tx and their dates are highlighted (red dot) in each time series. (C and D) same as A and B but for the western European heatwave in July 2022, (E and F) for the heatwave in the Amazon Basin in November 2023 (warm season September–November) and (G and H) the heatwave in Southern Africa (warm season December–February) in January 2016.

Models underestimate heatwaves across large areas of the continents. Extreme heatwaves intensify much faster then modeled in many regions that exist all over the land masses of our planet.

Regional trends of extreme temperatures are underestimated in climate model experiments in multiple regions globally. (A) Comparison of observed trends in tail-widening (yearly 99th percentile minus 87.5th percentile) with 49 simulations from coupled and SST-forced climate models (SI Appendix, Table S1). Observed trends are outside of the modeled range in several regions globally (dark red). Areas where the annual 87.5th percentile of Tx shows a negative trend in observations are shown in gray. (B–I) Distributions of modeled trends in the 99th percentile relative to the 87.5th percentile each year in areas as in Fig. 2 B–I for coupled and SST-forced models compared to ERA5 (red), JRA-55 (orange), and E-OBS (in B only) observations-based gridded climate data, displayed as box-and whisker-plots. Boxes span the 25th and 75th percentiles of the model spread while the median is shown as a horizontal black line. The whiskers denote the 5th and 95th percentiles, while the single model values are provided as scatters. In the same fashion, panels J and K show exemplary regions in which models exhibit an overestimation of historic trends in tail width. Bootstrapped 95% CI bounds are shown for observations (Data & Methods).

Models seriously underestimate the emergence of extreme heat already becoming close to deadly levels decades earlier than predicted

Models are unable to simulate all the mechanisms and processes that operate at small scales that intensify the worst heatwaves
