This essay traces the long and turbulent history of American booksellers who have faced censorship, harassment, and even violence for defending the freedom to read. Through vivid anecdotes and historical cases-from undercover stings in the early 1900s and legal battles over โ€œobsceneโ€ literature, to FBI surveillance of Black bookstores and bomb threats against feminist and LGBTQ+ shops-the author illustrates how bookstores have repeatedly become battlegrounds in the fight for civil liberties and free expression. Despite intimidation from both government and private groups, booksellers have pushed back, shaping legal precedents and rallying communities to defend First Amendment rights. The essay ultimately calls on readers to recognize bookstores as โ€œarsenals of democracyโ€ and to support their ongoing role in safeguarding intellectual freedom.

If youโ€™re looking to read more Palestinian literature and include more Palestinian writers in your reading list, make sure you read Child of a Stolen Homeland. Itโ€™s a book of poetry written in honour of Indigenous Palestinian and wider native culture, life and history.

Mahmoud Khalilโ€™s Son Arrives After ICE Refuses to Let Him Attend Birth (Gift Article) Mr. Khalil, a permanent resident detained in Louisiana, had requested a monitored furlough for the birth. His request was denied in less than an hour.

NEW: Mahmoud Khalil's wife gave birth to their child without him after ICE denied their request to let him be present.

โ€œThis was a purposeful decision by ICE to make me, Mahmoud, and our son suffer,โ€ Dr. Abdalla said. โ€œMy son and I should not be navigating his first days on earth without Mahmoud."

After being genocided and having their country flattened by Biden/Harris bombs, Gazans should now also bear guilt for Kamala losing the election? You can kiss my ๐Ÿ‰

Again, donโ€™t add salt to this wound by making victims of genocide under Biden/Harris *responsible* for the current malaise.

If youโ€™d have given 2 $h!t$ about Gaza before the elections, you couldโ€™ve pressured Kamala to revert on Palestine and then - since our vote is so relevant - Kamala wins.

10.04.2025 14:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

You donโ€™t like Jill Stein, donโ€™t vote for her.

But to now blame voters conscious of the Gazan genocide for the trump regime, is the height of cynicism.

NO we donโ€™t have to vote for genocide abetters. Rather blame yourselves for looking away from Gaza and take the trump regime as your karma.

10.04.2025 09:19 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Unfortunately the genocide started under Biden/Harris, and Kamala made absolutely no mention of it during her campaign.

Jill Stein was a good candidate and itโ€™s legitimate to vote for what you believe in, thatโ€™s democracy.

Unfortunately yet another demonstration why democracy needs tiers, layers based on IQ and academic prowess in order to function properly.

Ancient Greeks inherently captured this sentiment by not giving every dumbass a vote, only refined and well-educated city-zens could participate.

Free Mahmoud Khalil

14.03.2025 06:09 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 74    ๐Ÿ” 18    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 1
Dear Secretary Noem,

On behalf of our communities, we urge you to immediately release Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia graduate student and lawful permanent U.S. resident, and return him to his home and family in New York City.

On the night of Saturday, March 8, Mahmoud Khalil was arrested and taken from his Columbia University apartment by DHS agents to an undisclosed location. In a statement on X, the Department of Homeland Security announced that the administration would be detaining Khalil, a green card holder, in connection to his alleged participation in pro-Palestinian protests. Khalil has been denied his Constitutional right to due process, and is being held without legal justification or evidence that he has violated any laws.

The treatment of Mahmoud Khalil by the Department of Homeland Security is not only inhumane, it is a blatant violation of his legal rights. He has been separated illegally from his pregnant wife, who is a United States citizen, and detained without due process thousands of miles from home. We see these actions by the Trump administration for what they areโ€”a flagrantly unconstitutional attempt to suppress free speech and incite fear.

The administration's pattern of targeting the rights of students and immigrants to speak against injustice undermines democracy and makes everyone less safe. We're writing to urge his immediate release back to his family in New York City. We also call on the administration to remove ICE and DHS from our campuses. Finally, we urge Columbia University to cease any and all cooperation with immigration officials who violate our sanctuary city protections and put their students at risk.

The Trump Administrationโ€™s treatment of Mahmoud Khalil is inhumane and unconstitutional.

Today, I was proud to join NYS Assemblymember Valdez, NYC Council Member Avilรฉs, and 27 city, state, and federal officials to call for his immediate release.
