A person is running to the right with an arm outreached. Visible on their back is a crisscrossed array of blue tattoos. They are facing a galloping horse. In the background: two fire-engulfed hands coming down from the top of the page, with strings wound around the fingers. Behind the hands is a large pale rock; behind the pale rock is a dark burgundy landscape. The night sky is a deep blue.

A watercolor painting of a satyr embracing a young man from behind, gently peeling apart the man's flesh on his chest. Birds emerge from the opening in the man's chest. The man reaches one hand to back to caress the satyr's face, the other presses the satyr's hand to his chest. There's some circular celtic knotwork designs on the borders. The overall colors are warm golds and browns.

Finally finished this up! It's done in watercolor, gouache, and color pencils. I know I should try to render it in more detail but I'm not sure I want to. I like the texture being able to be textures. Maybe that will change in the future. For now, though, I like it πŸ˜…

a digital illustration of a hunched-over figure ont heir hands and knees with a dark background. The figure has blonde hair and a long tan trenchcoat. their face is fully obscured as they bend over a splatter of blood ont he floor, pushing themselves up on clawed pale hands.
Above the figure, there is a drawing of a clawed red hand holding a the same pale figure curled up in its palm. Viscous liquid dripping down from it.
At the top of the page, there are two beige-coloured hounds curling in on themselves in agonised positions. One is curling forward with its tongue curling out and the other is biting at its own side.
There are three small paragraphs of text in red ink and a typewriter style font reading:
"A Thing, touched by the hand of the beast", "Something rotting, marked, wretched, coiling and writhing behind each of their ribs", "Planted there by the ichor-slick-black-dripping hand of the Devil"

Book cover illustration by Eleonor Piteira, of Vengeful by V. E. Schwab, featuring a woman with dark short hair floating above two men. The two men, one dark-haired and the other blond, are in profile, glaring at each other. From the woman's hands, she is manipulating red threads linked to the red dotted halos around the men's heads.
On the background there is a city with multiple high-rise buildings, and the sun is setting behind them.

Here are the cover illustrations I did for the special @illumicrate.bsky.social edition of VENGEFUL by V. E. Schwab!

This is the combined version of the acetate dust jacket (with the characters) and the case cover (with the city). I posted the cover for Vicious on a separate post.

Damn, in order to understand what scientists mean sometimes you need skills akin to mind-reading and divination.

2) research skills are awesome for picking up themes and symbols in stories, and that’s tremendously useful for illustrating book covers, 3) learning to communicate with scientists and academics in general is amazing training for communication with clients as a freelance artist.

I like to laugh at myself for how my lab and research skills were totally wasted when I moved onto illustration and creative writing, and then I remember that 1) the central worldbuilding aspect of my current novel was inspired by my lil friend alpha-hemolysin…

If you’re ever in need of an expert on ethical and innovative practices in science journalism, I can be your guy.

If you’re ever in need of an expert on zinc-mediated regulation of alpha-hemolysin in uropathogenic Escherichia coli, I can ALSO be your guy.

Funny to be in that weird middle ground between β€˜Spanish LGBTQ+ creative professionals’ and β€˜Spanish-speaking academics and intellectuals’.

It IS true I used to be, if briefly, a Spanish-speaking academic. Twice.
