Bravo to space.com for this deeply reported, lengthy piece.

Depressing, but a shocking thing is Goddard is using the shutdown to order moves out of lab and engineering spaces on 2-3 days notice, requiring major equipment to just be left behind and demolished

Meet the scientist exposing shrimp fraud across the South. 'I'm a little bit of an evangelist.' For years, Louisiana shrimpers have struggled to compete against cheap foreign imports and an ongoing pattern of mislabeling. According to the FDA, 95% of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported ...

As an example, in Florida's St. Petersburg-Tampa region, 96 percent of restaurants were found to be serving imported shrimp but describing it as locally caught Gulf shrimp.

Someone asked me to consider sharing stories and legends from indigenous communities about sharks.

My professional development training for working in this space stressed the idea of "nothing about us without us," i.e., I should not be the one to tell their stories.

My number one tip for researchers that do a significant amount of non peer reviewed paper publication/outreach:

Create an excel table, every time you give an interview, talk, write an oped or white paper, etc. take 5 seconds to immediately note it in the excel.

What Extreme Poverty Looks Like Ten percent of humanity struggles to live on under $2 a day. That, and the gap between the extremely poor and the more privileged, is important to see.

Nearly 10% of humanity (~800M people in 2025) struggles to live on less than $3 a day. It’s important for Americans to appreciate that reality β€” and the growing gap between the extremely poor & the extremely privileged β€” because, as USAID demonstrated, our nation has the power to change it.

A page of drawings of Snowy Plovers. There are 7 birds visible on the page, two of the birds are squished together. There are basically three rows each with an adult bird and a juvenile bird. The first row has an adult first, standing head up in profile looking left then a juvenile in profile running to the left with the back leg up in a right angle. The words Anarhynchus rivosus are just above the first bird which is a juvenile running into the middle of the page in a three quarter view. Next to this bird is an adult in profile looking right with a juvenile shoving itself into the adults breast feathers, you can see the juveniles legs and some of its lower body. The final row has an adult foraging one leg down one leg up head down towards the ground going left to right. There is a juvenile on the right mirroring the adult except both legs are down. Both birds' front legs are angling further out towards the middle.

Someone was surprised to learn that I yeet bugs out instead of *gently relocating* them.

I appreciate the gesture. But in the tropics, seeing bugs where they shouldn't be is an hourlyβ€”not weekly thing. You learn what can survive a yeet to save time.

In this thread I'm rating animal yeetability.

The latest issue of @sierramagazine.bsky.social has one of the loveliest covers I've seen--and I am lucky enough to have the cover story. The article, though, which examines the Trump Administration's attack on US public lands and environmental law, is not nearly as pretty. #publiclands

The dismantling of the US Forest Service is imminent The public has less than a week remaining to comment on the administration's plans.

Using an emergency declaration, Trump’s timber production executive order would ease environmental protections so as to greatly expand logging in the national forests.
