SPECTRUM NEWS: Federal Medicaid cuts could hurt women’s health care providers in Maine by Sean Murphy PORTLAND — Advocates for two women’s health care providers in Maine are blasting the so-called Big Beautiful Bill’s spending cuts, saying it is targeting abortion providers and cutting off Mainers from even non-abortion-related health care.

Congress targeted Planned Parenthood for defunding, but also caught a Maine health care provider Planned Parenthood isn't the only abortion provider that stands to lose Medicaid payments under a budget plan signed by President Donald Trump.

“Knowing how hard it is to access care in this state, not allowing these community members to access their care, it’s cruel,” said Vanessa Shields-Haas, a nurse practitioner at our Thomaston clinic.

We’re Suing. Maine Family Planning Sues Trump Administration Over Medicaid Defunding. The largest network of reproductive healthcare centers in Maine is challenging President Trump’s sweeping bill, which immediately prohibits them from accepting Medicaid patients. Here’s Why:

The so-called “big beautiful bill” that President Trump signed on July 4th prevents MFP from accepting Medicaid funding, even though half of their patients rely on Medicaid. Many of these patients are in very rural areas with no other healthcare providers.

The lawsuit argues that defunding MFP violates the federal Constitution's Equal Protection guarantee and asks the Court to allow MFP to continue receiving Medicaid reimbursement for covered services, including appointments for birth control, STI testing, cancer screenings, routine OBGYN visits and primary care.

Penobscot County HIV outbreak continues to grow; providers say the rest of Maine is at risk The Maine Center for Disease Control has identified two more positive HIV cases in Penobscot County, bringing the total cases to 26 since an outbreak was identified more than a year ago.
