Radical Greek-French film director Costa-Gavras turns 92 today. Many great films, Z (1969), STATE OF SIEGE (1972), HANNAH K (1983), MISSING (1992) & others. What I most admire about his work is how he was unafraid to combine a radical political vision with a more mainstream narrative approach.

The Blue Dahlia (1946) is not just another Alan Ladd/Veronica Lake noir. It’s set in the LA of demobilized Navy vets facing PTSD, marriages that didn’t survive separation, and war injuries. Noir acknowledges that not everyone who came home made it safely through the war. #filmnoirclub
