Same. It’s all just different enough to be annoying. The transparent background on the alerts makes it hard to read them with a glance.

And having gone to a big state school, and taught at big state schools as well as Kenyon, students at small liberal arts colleges get MUCH better educations. The small class sizes allow for better instruction in innumerable ways. Each student gets SO MUCH of their professors’ time.

The actual price for most families at the college I teach at, Kenyon, is MUCH lower than the sticker price. Absolutely worth looking into small private colleges, especially for low income families. Many (including Kenyon) have aid packages & scholarships such that the lowest income students pay $0.

As parents are helping their kids consider colleges, this is my perennial reminder that state schools often have lower price tags, yes, but private schools, including many small liberal arts schools, often have better aid packages, and are thus often cheaper in the end (but may be more competitive).

Oops, I actually have 5 alpaca yarn options. I found a stash of baby alpaca that I bought in Peru over a decade ago and have been saving ever since because no project seemed special enough. Maybe this one is it.

Should I use 100% alpaca or an alpaca-silk blend (80-20) for fingerless gloves? Not sure….

I feel like I’ve been preparing for this scenario my entire adult life. My huge yarn stash doesn’t seem so insane now, since I have 4 different options of alpaca yarn in her favorite color that I can use to help my injured aunt.

I am in the situation every knitter has been preparing for, but rarely finds themselves in: emergency knitting needed. My aunt hurt her shoulder, and putting on long-sleeved shirts hurts. She wants long fingerless gloves, but is allergic to wool. Doesn’t like the feel of acrylic. She needs alpaca.

The bookstore manager and I spent like 20 minutes reading kids’ books and laughing together while I chose.

I love my local bookstore. I asked for picture book recommendations for kids who own a lot of books & got recommendations of gorgeous & hilarious books that are either new or not super popular, so my gift recipients likely won’t already own them.

Plus they’re gift wrapping for me for free.

My biologist brain can’t get past the fact that she refers to water in the manta ray’s mouth as β€œswallowed sea.” Manta rays don’t swallow seawater. That’s the whole point of the filtering and gills. The water is NOT swallowed. It flows out through the gills. Food is swallowed. Water is not.

Great question!

1) First and foremost, we evaluate a candidate based on the departmental guidelines and expectations provided. We don't hold the candidate to arbitrary standards, or even to those of our own institution unless asked to do so. We assess the materials against the guidelines provided.

the thing about extra-time accommodations is that either they help you a lot or they don't matter much, and if they help you a lot that is evidence that you should get them

IRB-approved poster announcing an anonymous survey study for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and health care providers who treat patients for PCOS. There is a QR code and URL on the poster that would take you to the survey. I apologize that the description/consent section at the top of the survey is an image file because word version did not format at all well in Qualtrics. I can come back later and provide this content in comments to this post...

That feeling when you absolutely don’t need more yarn and have run out of storage space for yarn, but also knit picks is having a sale….

We started by leaving out snacks on the table for them - usually dry cereal or raisins or fresh fruit or granola bars or some combination thereof. Then on days we forgot, they began foraging for themselves.

Yay!!! My 7 year old hasn’t organized teeth brushing for himself & little sister (5.5), but they now regularly feed themselves β€œbreakfast snacks” and watch tv while I’m sleeping in. Sometimes that’s an apple or cereal. Other times it’s cookies. Worth it.

Nativism comes from a place of insecurity and cowardice. You have to believe in your core that you can't compete with talented immigrants and that you've failed to build a strong enough community to welcome in more neighbors.

My Emotional Support Beagle and Lap Puppy takes his jobs very seriously.

My mother in law passed away last night, and this Velcro dog can tell I need extra snuggles. I can’t do anything today without tripping over him.
