Curbing overuse of dental antibiotics proves daunting

It is time for the dental profession to take a more active role in national action plans against #AMR and to engage systematically in antibiotic stewardship. AMR is a shared challenge that requires dentistry to make a clear contribution to stewardship efforts.

Antibiotic use in Australia is lower than a decade ago, and hospitals use last-line antibiotics carefully. However, rising #AMR and inconsistent prescribing, especially after surgery and in geriatrics, highlight the need to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship.

AMR and vaccines: Can universal coverage avert a post-antibiotic era?

Vaccines are powerful tools against #AMR. By preventing infections, they reduce antibiotic use and slow the spread of resistant microbes. Expanding global access to effective vaccines is essential to preserving the antibiotics we depend on.

Europe and India are making history today.

We have concluded the mother of all deals.

We have created a free trade zone of two billion people, with both sides set to benefit.

This is only the beginning.

We will grow our strategic relationship to be even stronger.

India and Europe have made a clear choice.

The choice of strategic partnership, dialogue and openness.

Leveraging our complementary strengths.

And building mutual resilience.

We are showing a fractured world that another way is possible.

A bit of perspective: Nobel medals have been sold before. In 2022, Dmitry Muratov auctioned his 2021 Peace Prize medal for $103.5M to help Ukrainian children, and in 2014 James D. Watson sold his 1962 Nobel medal for $4.1M at Christie’s, both via auction.

Studying low-dose antibiotic effects on the gut microbiome Antibiotics at sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs), which are commonly present in food and the environment, can reach the human gut microbiome and silently disrupt the balance of microbes, contributing to the emergence and persistence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The gastrointestinal (GI) tract presents spatially heterogeneous antibiotic exposures, making it challenging to assess their full impact with conventional experimental approaches. Although in vitro and in vivo models provide some insight, they often lack physiological relevance or scalability. This highlights the need to reconsider the criteria used to determine ‘safe’ upper concentration limits in food, as current standards may underestimate the risks of sub-MIC exposures. Therefore, better integrative modeling approaches are essential to uncover hidden drivers of resistance and guide effective interventions.
