Idyllic Scene of a Coffee cup focused in the foreground, glacier in the background
The camp kitchen, tucked up against a small rock wall, in the morning light
Glacier striations on a polished bedrock
Two small orange tents in the alpine
We couldnβt access the site last year due to wildfires in the Columbia Trench, and Iβm happy to report that most things kept on ticking happily for the extra year. Alpine meteorology, ground temperatures, and stream temperature data to work with!

Rainbow over a glacier in the mountains
Small yellow flowers in the alpine (erigeron aureus)

Another fantastic #fieldwork trip to Conrad #Glacier for alpine data collection and station maintenance, with the support of CMH and NSERC. @unbcgeographyensc.bsky.social

Is Canada A Country, Or The 51st State?
The Carney government must not cede more ground to the Trump administration by backing down on recognizing the state of Palestine.
Canada must not cede any more of our sovereignty to the US by backing down on recognizing Palestine as a state, and the Carney government should make it clear that it won't give an inch.

Guidance on the acceptability of using generative AI in coursework
Our university has 'AI' guidance - not a formal policy - (www.unbc.ca/provost/guid...), but even calling it AI is misguided, IMHO. And it really doesn't get to the heart of it: learning is a process. Show me the process.
And if you can't be bothered to write it, I can't be bothered to read it.

Thinking about two fourth year courses I'll be teaching @unbcgeographyensc.bsky.social (Advanced Geospatial Analysis and Mountains) this fall.
I'm going to go with a zero-tolerance #LLM usage policy. Students will be marked on *progress* from outline to draft to final paper/project.

Just caught Dr. Barry Cooper (longtime climate change denialist and Friends of Science contributor) on CBC's The Current talking about Alberta separation. The only reason this has legs, IMHO, is oil and gas interests in Alberta want no federal oversight into how much they extract or how they do it.

Seeing as how no one is actually proposing that, and even if they were it would only require about 0.05% of the total surface are of the planet to be covered in solar panels, I'll assume that you would prefer to be actively ignoring the many different solutions that are available.
