A Look Back to When Fast Food Spots Became Halloween Haunts Return to the era of McNuggets dressed like Dracula and Happy Meal pails that doubled as trick-or-treat buckets.

Welcome to The Boo Box.

This October, there are 5 Fridays, and each week, I'll take a look at and dive into Halloween-themed toys. This week, I feel like it might be the most iconic with fast food treats.

Thanks again to @popheist.com for letting me talk about one of my Special Interests.

Obviously, this is loser shit, but I think AI has really cemented itself as the visual language of fascism. It's anti-human, flattened, uninteresting, and cheap. It's like looking at a Potemkin Village and thinking that's the same as architecture.

Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post, and the Cost of Speaking Out As Saudi Arabia hosts comedians and courts gamers, the silenced voice of Jamal Khashoggi still echoes.

Washington Post dismantled the platform Jamal wrote on. Discarded the fellowship they created in his memory.

They fired me unjustly for speaking the truth.

But I’ll never stop talking about my friend, writer, and amazing human, Jamal Khashoggi.

RIP, Jamal.

ICE Agents Rappel from Helicopter in Overnight Chicago Raid, Dragging Kids from Beds to U-Hauls Overnight on Tuesday, Sept. 30, federal agents from different agencies raided an apartment building on the South Side of Chicago, pulling men, women and children — some of them allegedly naked — from ...

I always pay attention to what stories People Magazine and other consumer media outlets cover. That's how you can tell that something has broken through the usual political and news bubbles. This horrific Chicago story has broken through. people.com/ice-agents-o...

Formal post soon, but for the first time in eight (!) years, I'm open for illustration & short comics work! I'd love to do more TTRPG equipment & character designs/ illos; book covers; & book interiors. I also love making short comics & would love to be a part of more anthologies! www.careydraws.com

Have entered my unironic 80s adult contemporary phase of the pop music as life-cycle, delayed bc lack of children, maybe? Sitting on the T listening to a city pop playlist - wish I had a game with this as the backdrop, Sonic but slowed down (too bad Sayonara Wild Hearts is no longer on iOS).

Hollow Knight, to me, is that nonsense masocore/Souls-like style of play that just isn’t my bag.

Whereas the Castlevania lineage at least kept things explore-y and interesting, where the leveling systems gave you lots of tools to get past various bosses and challenges.

Metroid: Dread was an even further disappointment and complete abandonment. I have yet to beat the final boss because it is just too hard and it hurts my hands to bother to attempt.

I was left behind pretty early on - wvwn before the first Hollow Knight. Metroid: Samus Returns’ introduction of the parry made a casual exploration with increasing difficulty boss challenges a constant headache. It wasn’t require to progress, but without mastery (and physical dexterity) was a slog

Hollow Knight: Silksong Reinforces the Metroidvania Genre’s Accessibility Barriers - IGN There are overarching accessibility problems in the Metroidvania genre, and Hollow Knight: Silksong is just perpetuating and reinforcing inaccessible barriers.

Excellent article here about who gets left behind, and am struck that it’s not just this game/developer at fault, but the underlying assumptions of what a ‘metroidvania’ is or should be by players (see the comments) or other developers.

Peter Thiel giving lectures about the antichrist is just another illustration of the fact that the most dangerous thing about billionaires is that they exist in a world where nobody tells them their stupid ideas are stupid and are therefore prone to inflict their stupid ideas on all of us.

They Tried to Snuff Out Hawaii's Native Board Game. Meet the Man Keeping It Alive Kōnane was once a national pastime, played by peasants and rulers alike. Now John Kaʻohelauliʻi has made it his mission to bring it back.

A few months ago I pitched @lisatozzi.bsky.social a story about the revival of an ancient Hawaiian board game. She said just go and write it. Before the story was published today she was laid off — so thank you to Lisa for making this happen and everyone involved in the story except Mark Zuckerberg

This is a great piece, shows not only how games are an intrinsic part of our cultures but also how you can use them to tell wider stories. Excellent stuff
