Moms Stop the Harm (MSTH) is a network of Canadian families impacted by substance-use-related harms and deaths. We advocate for the change of failed drug policies, provide peer support to families who have lost a loved one or use or have used substances.

"At pivotal times, medical providers could have helped my son," writes Patricia A. Roos. Instead, "we found doctors and nurses chastising Alex for his 'bad choices' and 'lack of will power.'"
"At the facilities he resided in, he was simply an 'addict.'"

WEBINAR A Crisis of Disorder or a Crisis of Legitimacy? A Critical Discourse Analysis of B.C. Police Officers' Perspectives on Decriminalization Concerns of 'social disorder' have become a powerful obstacle to drug policy reform in recent years, evidenced through the backlash to decriminalization in both British Columbia (B.C.) and Oregon. To better understand how decriminalization came to be associated with disorder in B.C., this study applied Critical Discourse Analysis to 36 semi-structured interviews conducted with front-line officers in B.C. Two dominant discourses were identified: 1) Decriminalization as Losing Control and 2) Policing as a Persecuted Institution.
HRNAβs 2025/2026 webinar season is going to be π₯.

The people I've known who died struggling with addiction didn't give up ...
They died because they were beaten down by battles that no one could see or understand ....
The gateway to addiction is trauma. π

Thunder Bay, ON's #InternationalOverdoseAwarenessDay was a dynamic street fair, in the historic urban core, attracting so many affected by substance use harms.
Together, we are determined to end the stigma: MSTH, Thunder Bay Drug Awareness Committee, and Creaction Collective, pictured below.
#InternationalOverdoseAwarenessDay in Windsor, ON. Thank you Kathy for sharing these photos!
We are huge fans of your substance use health care / harm reduction umbrella! All of these services and/or social determinants of health challenges must be addressed in order for people to thrive.
These photos come to us from Happy Valley-Goose Bay in Newfoundland.
From East to West coast of Turtle Island, we are so impressed by all the education, dedication, and efforts that went into #InternationalOverdoseAwarenessDay 2025 by MSTH members, allies, and people who use(d) drugs!! π
Thank you Glenn, for courageously sharing your story and that of your son. We all grieve with you and for all our loved ones needlessly taken from us. These deaths are preventable!

"In B.C., where more than 16,000 people have died due to illicit drugs since a public health emergency was declared in 2016, the day is a poignant reminder of the human toll of a crisis that has become highly politicized."

"One of the biggest barriers to recovery that people with opioid use disorder can face is their strong and well-justified fear of the harrowing symptoms of withdrawal.
Symptoms are severe, disabling, even life-threatening. People feel like they are dying"
