A Revelation of Character - New play about Boston's female abolitionists A Revelation of Character honors female abolitionists, presented by the Associates of the BPL in collaboration with Plays in Place.

If you are in #Boston, highly recommend this new play by @patrickgabridge.bsky.social. I got to consult some on his powerful evocation of the vexed friendship bn #abolitionists Lydia Maria Child & Maria Weston Chapman--so timely for imagining political reform!

G.O.P. Bill Adds Surprise Tax That Could Cripple Wind and Solar Power Wind and solar companies were already bracing for Congress to end federal subsidies. But the Senate bill goes even further and penalizes those industries.

Senate Republicans have quietly inserted provisions in President Trump’s domestic policy bill that would not only end federal support for wind and solar energy but would impose an entirely new tax on future projects, a move that industry groups say could devastate the renewable power industry.

An engraving of the Boston Massacre by Paul Revere.

An engraving of the Boston Massacre by Paul Revere.

On this day in 1770, British soldiers fired upon a group of rowdy colonists in Boston, killing five and wounding others. This event came to be known as the Boston Massacre.

β€œOn that night, the foundation of American Independence was laid,” wrote John Adams.

Yes! Such letters are merely gatekeeping tools and promote the currently entrenched system--it's not just the writing skill of the recommender that counts, but their level of status within the system.

My novel, Steering to Freedom, looks at Robert Smalls' war years. An amazing man and story.

The National Association of Home Builders explains what happens if we make inputs for home construction, such as Canadian lumber, more expensive.

Tariffs on Canada are likely to drive up lumber prices yet again (they only finally came down after the pandemic), which drive housing prices up even more.

Zitron is brilliant and cutting about the layers of AI hype we've seen.

Cut my new play from 75 pages to 56 in the past three days. The writers out there will appreciate how monumental this feels.

Really feeling this one. For some reason Gmail just added an AI button and I hate it. And Excel seems to think I asked for an AI button, for no good reason.

Your annual reminder that Dr. King believed in guaranteed universal basic income that gave all people a dignified life, guaranteed housing for all, guaranteed access to a high quality education, and said that β€œno one should be forced to live in poverty while others live in luxury.”

Sometimes the best celebration for completing a new first draft of a play is a nap.

Just finished a rough draft of my latest historical play! This one is about friendships and fractures within the Boston female abolitionist society. The fight for justice is not a smooth road, and I imagine we'll experience that fully in the years ahead.

Tracy showed me the ability to delay checkout (drop down one on the list) and I feel so much less pressure now. (But now fear I will get out of control with requests)

Trump's ant-vax health picks are like appointing a fire chief who doesn't believe water can put out fires and promises to get rid of all those pesky fire hydrants in town.

Hit my annual goal of 400 ass-in-the-chair writing and research hours yesterday. And it was at the Boston Public Library Special Collections room, reading an abolitionist diary from 1835 for a new commission. Feeling very lucky. (Writers who track stats know how good it feels to hit your goals.)

Failure to pass the Budget hurts tens of thousands of small businesses that work with the federal government (like mine). Passing a CR doesn't help at all (agencies can't issue new contracts). They are supposed to pass it in SEPTEMBER. Insanity.

It's a shame that there is no good biography of Maria Weston Chapman, something on par with Lydia Moland's biography of Lydia Maria Child. Surely there is an historian out there ready take on the task (I'm writing a second play that features her, but we need a full book about her).
