An advertisement in the August 9 1946, edition of the San Francisco Examiner promoting the new newsreel with the following copy:
“Spectacular 1st Pictures!
UNDERWATER ATOM BLAST
Sensational Films of the Most Powerful Spectacle in History

SEE Arkansas, Saratoga & 5 other ships sunk! Entire preparations for atom bomb $5

HIROSHIMA!
See casualties and damage by 1st A-bomb!”
A short article about the Paramount newsreel in the August 9, 1946, edition of The Hollywood Reporter with the headline, “Second Atomic Pic Includes Shocking Japanese Footage.”
An excerpt:
"The clip becomes a real shocker because of the previously unseen shots of the devastation wrought on human beings by the atom bomb at Hiroshima. Radio active [sic] rays burned the pattern of one woman's dress on her skin. Others were scarred and blinded in the most hideous manner. No punches are pulled in showing any part of the devastation. The reel explans that no punches should be."
A short article about the Paramount newsreel in the August 8, 1946, edition of the New York Times with the headline, “Reaction of Humans to Atom Bomb in Film.”
This is the last paragraph (highlighted in yellow), which mistakenly (but understandably) attributes the horrific injuries viewed on screen to radioactivity rather than the incredibly hot thermal pulse generated by the nuclear fireball in its first few seconds:
“However it is the scenes of the burned-out city of Hiroshima and the pitiful sight of the maimed victims which stand out most harrowingly as grim testimony to the deadly radioactive effects of the bomb. Most victims look as though they had been seared by an acetylene torch and there is a quick shot of one man who lost half of his ear as a result of radioactive burns. The intensity of the radioactivity is demonstrated by the imprint of a dress design on a woman’s body and the shadow of a ladder on a wall.”
An article about the Paramount “Atom Bombs!” newsreel in the August 9, 1946, edition of the Washington, DC, Evening Star with the headline, “Beauty and Horror of Bomb Captured by News Cameras.”
A paragraph near the bottom (highlighted in yellow) reads:
"Minor threads of drama are numerous in the Bikini reels. That of Paramount, for instance, is made enormously more effective by the inclusion of Hiroshima bomb-victim photographs, captured from the Japanese but only now released for the first time. Following the photographs of the blast of bomb No. 5, they represent a powerful correlation of cause and effect which greatly heightens the drama of the reel."
Today in 1946, moviegoers in US theaters showing Paramount newsreels were able to see for the first time stark images of some of the Japanese victims of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima a year earlier, including several people horribly burned and disfigured by the intense thermal pulse.

What Russian bombardment feels like in Kyiv
The Kyiv Independent staff documented what it feels like to live and sleep in Kyiv, Ukraine, as Russia intensifies its drone and missile attacks on the city. Filmed over several weeks in June and July, our journalists take shelter in bathrooms and basements as explosions ring out overhead.

Over the years, the idea’s got support from councillors, TDs, the Minister for Transport – but there’s still no simple, official way to do it in Dublin city.

Let's hope and actively work for a change. It's not on for a country like Sweden, with its pride in "Vision Zero" and equality, to obstruct and ignore a transport mode that does not endanger others and enables equality.

“Make America Healthy Again”: The new Lysenkoism
Trofim Lysenko was a Soviet scientist whose dogmatic science denialism led to mass famine when his ideas were applied to agriculture. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a lot like Lysenko in his science denial
With RFK Jr. and the political ideology & pseudoscience of MAHA, eery US parallels to what happened with Lysenkoism in the USSR in terms of the Soviet Union's scientific prominence and the welfare of its citizenry... Nice read here by @gorskon.bsky.social
