Interviewed and go an offer for a part-time position as an EMT instructor this morning (exciting, right!?!) and celebrated by visiting the National Postal Museum. One of the most underrated if not unknown Smithsonian museums.

24.02.2026 03:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There are so many HEMS helos flying around the DC metro that the State of Maryland follows all of them in real-time through SYSCOM in Baltimore. But only Maryland State Police and the Park Police will land pre-hospital or are hoist capable as far as I know.

A different show I think, but Iβm reminded of the BBC crew that witnessed a HEMS dispatcher go into cardiac arrest on camera, and the flight crew successfully worked the code and brought him back.

USPS Eagle has a hoist and will fly out as well. Those guys are pretty rad.

Recertified last week. Eight years as a medic. Nine before that as as a FF/EMT. Wildfire time before that.
Been a good ride so far. I hope to keep going for a while

All-hazards became official FEMA policy in 1993 when the incoming Clinton Administration redirected civil defense money towards natural hazards. Witt's confirmation testimony makes this point clear.

When crap hits the fan, I absolutely want the old-salt medic who loves EJs to arrive on scene. And when the call is over, I will hide from that same medic.

I donβt watch shows related to my work, but people I hold in high regard enjoy this show and its authenticity.
I can also confirm that some of the most sour and grouchy people I serve with when things are quiet are also some of the most talented lifesaving professionals during a crisis.

We were out doing area familiarization Thursday night, and I used the time to chat about how important it is to look like you know what you are doing, especially if you lack the gray hairs that give some of us the benefit of the doubt. Also talked about good radio etiquette.
Time well spent.
Every new FF/EMT on my shift for the past 15 years learns βRobertβs Rules of Rescueβ
1) Do not die
2) Always sound good on the radio
3) Always look cool
Jobshirts are key to #3, especially for teenagers who need to present themselves well.
First thing I did when I got my EM job was pay for a 5.11 jobshirt like I wear at the volley house. Probably don that beast twice a week (at least) from Oct-Apr and every other day while activated for an emergency.

I watched the USA lose the Olympic menβs hockey gold medal to Canada with one of my best friends in 2010, and I was with him and our kids when the USA beat Canada today. This is joy.
