This Friday, WHAT welcomes Dr. Iddo Tavory, Professor of Sociology at New York University, to give a talk titled “The Situation: A Cultural-Interactionist Theory.” Prof. Tavory will present his conceptualization of “situation” that accounts for “elements that lurk under the surface of interaction.”

Also, “It just didn’t occur to me” is not gonna be a convincing justification because it *clearly* did occur to her, as indicated by the asterisked quote - she knows very well the racial implication of the usage of the word “Chinese,” and chose to use it.

So, I’d like to ask the speaker why she *explicitly* decided to include the word “Chinese” here. Unless she can provide a convincing justification for the unnecessary usage of this explicit cultural reference, I see this as intentional racism. Don’t try to let it slide.

I’m sorry, but this is no “implicit cultural generalization.” This is explicit racial discrimination. The word “Chinese” does not add anything to the substantive message she’s trying to communicate here. Taking away this word would not impede the audience’s understanding of the sentence.

The relief when I double checked my student visa and saw it’s valid until January 2027, not 2025 as I incorrectly remembered 😮‍💨
