I have many thoughts about Charlie Kirk—and perhaps even more about the white elites, including some on the left, who insist we can’t hold multiple realities at once. We can. And we must.

Apenas desejo saúde, mas muita saúde ao Jair. Para que ele possa desfrutar bem de cada um dos quase 10.000 dias de prisão que ele tem pela frente (e que ficou barato, por sinal). E o mesmo vale para a corja inteira.

It was a very nice talk, where we discussed the actual "impact" of those tariffs, the potential consequences for Brazilian politics, and other related matters.

There will be elections of the House of Councillors next July. Regardless of what the polls might indicate, parties can count with their loyal support base but should improve their strategies to convince undecided people to go vote.

In 2021, despite the peak of the Corona pandemic, he also secured the first place with 45,000 votes (turnout: 43%). But this time he got only 37,000 (turnout: 49%); while still in first place and over 12,000 from the second place, that was a huge drop.

The city is a traditional stronghold for the Komeito party, and yet has been seeing its vote share being reduced election after election. In 2017, their candidate won the first place with 48,000 votes (turnout: 52%).

Finally, I did not bother to plot but there was also the issue of turnout. Japan is known for the lack of interest in politics, and this time it was not different: 47.6% of the voters attended the polls. As a reference, I lived for almost 10 years in Hachioji city, in the outskirts of Tokyo.

The interview was in English so there might be some confusion in the words, but still that shows how Japanese politicians traditionally treat gender issues. Let's not forget of a Tokyo MP from the Liberal Party a few years ago shouting to a female MP that she should hurry up and get married.

By the way, the leader of the DPP (Democratic Party for the People) said recently at a press conference that his party is not successful in gaining the support of female voters because "their policies might be too complicated for them".

26.06.2025 20:23 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

And no surprise at all, the LDP is "successful" in keeping only one female member (4%) - thus the "dinosaur" reference earlier.

26.06.2025 20:23 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Except for 2017 with Koike's boom with her new party, the JCP (Japanese Communist Party) has been traditionally leading the number of female candidates being successful in the elections. All other traditional parties figure way lower: the Komeito now with 6 seats (31%) and the CDP with 4 (23%).

26.06.2025 20:23 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Then we have the number of female candidates. There were 99 candidates and 48 of them were elected. Although for Japanese standards 1/3 of the assembly composed of women might be quite a major happening, the party data shows much more interesting results:

26.06.2025 20:23 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

The Komeito was already running with one less candidate and yet lost three seats in two very important (both politically and historically to the party) districts, from 23 down to 19. And there was an increase of some parties from the forever-opposition side, such as the CDP and the DPP.

Governor Yuriko Koike's party (Tomin First) was successful in retrieving the first place which was lost in 2021 to her old party LDP. The LDP, which is the prime minister's party and has been in power since the dinosaurs age almost without change (only happened twice), melted down to 21 seats.

Last Sunday, Tokyo held elections for its Metropolitan Assembly and some of the results were quite interesting. I plotted the number of seats each party had in the past four elections as a comparison.
