retreat. retreat. stay safe. stay warm. stay home. stay close to familiarity. you don't need all those noisy crowds. and you've done all that stuff in the past. but neither do I want to become a recluse. germ phobic. noise cancelling headphone wearer. I'm somewhere in between all this . . .

but then all the things that could possibly go wrong flood my head. delays. cancellations. relief bus journeys. floods. terror attacks. all the things that raise my anxiety levels. that trigger my predictably unpredictable bladder. queuing. needing the toilet. not finding a toilet. pissing myself...

I work through travel plans in my head but invariably back out of actually seeing them through. like taking the train to London to see an exhibition. I visualise the process of buying tickets online (no idea). getting to the station. the journey. the hotel. eating out. the museums. even shopping . .

mask up and carry hand sanitizer. dirty filthy grubby diseased humans are everywhere. but at least the grocery store is helping the planet with their newly installed energy saving chiller cabinets. every little bit helps etc. achoo . . !

do they disinfect the handles I asked. I doubt it she replied. as I left the store I wondered if any studies had been done on the infectiousness of chiller cabinet door handles. I raised my buff to cover my mouth and nose as a sneezing gent headed my way. do as Daisy does I concluded . . .

and old people don't like change. so we are told. not that I'm that old. not yet. I asked her what she thought of the new chiller cabinets. the type that requires a door to be opened to access the food. ew she said. all those germy fingers. yuck. my thoughts entirely . . .

Daisy at the checkout wearing her face mask today. immunosuppressed or neurotic. or maybe she doesn't want to infect her customers. she asked me if I was able to find everything I needed. you might recall the grocery store is having a refit. not sure I like the changes but hey I'm getting old . . .

the importance of editing. my lovely heroine is drinking a cup of hot chocolate. but a few paragraphs later it has mysteriously turned into coffee. oops . . !

my final dream of the night played out like a metaphor for my life. after weaving in and out of traffic and negotiating a wobbly plank across a river I could finally see my destination through a thicket of trees. however it was at this point that I chose to turn back . . .

a point of note. for reasons unfathomable the tinned soup was separated from the cup a soups by a range of Mexican foods. and the mother in law wanted a bottle of Baileys (on special offer) to go with her cup a soups (3 for 2) and black pudding (regular price) . . .

the grocery store refit was in full swing today but Daisy at the checkout was nowhere to be seen. in her place a young lad was learning the ropes but a single loose orange flummoxed him and sent him scurrying off for assistance. not sure he was supposed to abandon his till mid service but hey-ho . .
