We're talking about people who make as much as I do; most of the moms I work with are home health aides. They can't afford full-time child care. If I have 16 kids, I can pay myself for 40 hours of work. But last year, I didn't, and obviously I'm still doing the same amount of work. I've been running the day care out of my home for more than seven years. It's a profession I entered out of necessity and have stayed in out of passion. I pay for everything - food, cleaning supplies, toys - and we have to meet the same requirements as a large company in terms of paying for liability insurance, which can feel pointless in this industry. I mean, if something happens to one of my children, I lose my license. End of story."

Just a friendly reminder: When your parents die, you don't inherit their debts. If the money left in their estate isn't enough to cover their debts, too bad. It's not your problem.

Book 9 of 2026: WOLF IN WHITE VAN by @themountaingoats.bsky.social. I first read it about a decade ago, but something called me to re-read it now. Maybe it’s that the bleak violence of today’s world makes escape in a game seem appealing. But it’s not escape, just another layer of reality.

Finally read R.F. Kuang’s novel BABEL this year and really liked it. Also enjoyed Tom Crewe’s THE NEW LIFE and Stéphane Larue’s LE PLONGEUR, which I read in French because I’m *fancy* but has been translated into English as THE DISH WASHER.

I dream one day of getting on this website and seeing men everywhere getting upset about info like this and like Epstein because men’s violence and cruelty gives them a bad fucking name and it is THE THING that makes them lonely. Imagine if they tackled the problem they created

Book 8 of 2026: THE NEW LIFE by Tom Crewe. A queer historical fiction in which nearly every character is forced to make impossible choices they’d never be forced to make had they lived a century later. Our existence in the new life (or something closer to it) makes the novel more hopeful.

My mom was born in 1953, and when she was in high school they had to take music appreciation class. She knew all these classical composers because she had to learn to recognize them in school. By the time I was in high school anything like that was optional if it existed at all. 🤷‍♀️

I think sometimes when notaries work for banks or another private institution, they’re bonded by that institution, and the institution in question doesn’t want to take on the liability. But I am not bonded by anyone but myself!

Book 7 of 2026: LE PLONGEUR by Stéphane Larue. It’s been forever since I read a book in French, but I figured my recent trip to Montreal was a good excuse—especially because this novel is a romp through Montreal’s drug- and booze-fueled restaurant scene from the perspective of a new dishwasher.
