LA’s new rent-stabilization rent limits are about to take effect. Here’s what’s new:

➡️ Rent increases capped at 1-4% (vs. 3-10% previously)
➡️ Allowable rent hikes calculated using 90% of inflation (vs. 100% previously)
➡️ No more extra rent increases for utilities or having a child

There is no legal basis for this and no plan to get out. The world is less safe because of this reckless and illegal act.

It’s only fitting that this intersection honors Jackie – the first openly gay person elected to office in LA. And her work includes legislation at the city and state levels, granting same-sex couples nearly all the rights & benefits of marriage years before same-sex marriage was legalized.

“Jackie Goldberg Sunset Junction” where Santa Monica meets Sunset is at the heart of Queer History in LA, near the site of the first organized LGBT+ protest in the US at The Black Cat.

It’s also been home to countless gay rights groups, mutual aid organizations, & beloved small businesses. (🧵)

LAPD wants judge to lift an order restricting use of force against the press The police department filed an emergency order ahead of this Saturday's No Kings protest.

We introduced a motion to LIMIT LAPD using projectiles at protests and to join most major cities like NYC and Boston in utilizing a “graded response” model during protests where heavily armed officers are kept in reserve and only used if the situation escalates to violence.

This position DOES NOT speak for the full City Council.

The LAPD should NEVER be permitted to use force against journalists or anyone peacefully exercising their first amendment rights.

Now, the corporate landlord lobby is funneling energy to protect profits at the expense of working people.

These lobbyists claim to champion small landlords, but they'll never mention that LA *already* allows landlords to apply for exemptions if they can’t afford the cap.

This isn't extreme. This isn't unreasonable. Many nearby cities already cap rent increases at 3%:

➡️ West Hollywood
➡️ Cudahy
➡️ Santa Ana
➡️ LA County (base formula)
➡️ Huntington Park

Take a senior in 1986 who might pay $500 of their $600 Social Security check on rent.

With inflation and our current system - their Social Security in 2020 would be $1,430, but their rent would be $1,610.

That’s 112% of income going to rent. It's more than just unfair - it’s unsustainable.

Our current system was designed over 40 years ago and allows rent increases up to *10%* depending on the year and type of unit.

Even when inflation is ZERO, landlords can still increase rents by 3%! That's the opposite of stable.

LA’s Housing & Homelessness Committee is meeting TOMORROW to consider capping rent increases at 3% for every rent-stabilized tenant in the city.

This could determine the rent next year for you and and 1.1 million of your neighbors.
