Well, Lucy, have you read his biography? Like your Schroeder, he was a virtuoso pianist. He also played Organ and Viola.

It was obligatory and quite overplayed during the 20th century. Now it is recorded and performed less often.

Luminous EspaΓ±a – Celebrating renowned Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923), born in coastal Valencia, Spain, on Feb. 27th. His luminous paintings capture the intense sunlight of the Spanish seaside. You feel the sun so acutely that you are inclined to squint at these.

I continue to delight in Absolute, Eleonor Bindman's beautiful Orchid disc of her piano transcriptions of Bach Lute Suites. As UK music critic Fran Wilson said, "the most satisfying aspect of Eleonor’s concert was her ability to bring so much colour and nuance to the music." True here, too.

Happy birthday to 19th century British composer, Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918). Best known for his choral music, he also wrote symphonies, recorded here by Matthias Bamert and the London Philharmonic.

Celebrating the birthday of Frank Bridge (1879-1941) with his late work "Oration" from the SACD "In The Shadow of War" by cellist Steven Isserlis, Hugh Wolff and the DSO Berlin. Isserlis reminded me of it today, saying, "I'm biased, I know; but his Oration for cello and orchestra is a masterpiece."

Last night, a rarified bit of England came to Evansville, Indiana. Renowned eight-member #VOCES8, world’s most-streamed classical vocal ensemble, gave an unforgettable performance here. Their blended singing was nuanced, joyful and left us in awe. The human voice is the most remarkable instrument.

Re: my recent post on Imogen Cooper’s Beethoven, a reader reminded me of her fine Mozart. In 2007, AVIE launched a three-disc series of Cooper with the Royal Northern Sinfonia in Mozart concertos. Gramophone put them β€œamong the subtlest, liveliest and most probing of Mozartians.” Superb & available.

Enough lieder to last a lifetime. At least you’re not listening to every singer’s interpretation of every one. That could take several lifetimes.

A symphonist like you is never bored, given what’s happening at the edges of music. Maybe it all will move toward the center after all.
