Yup that's another great bonus of smaller projects. Personally I don't think I could work on the same game for 5 years... although some people do prefer that.

If you REALLY REALLY must build a giant game, then my advice is split that game into multiple smaller games and release them one by one, then at the end put them all together into one giant game

And finishing it is the key. Shipping something, even something small, teaches you more than any half-finished mega project ever will.

Keep it small, keep it fun, and keep shipping!

So here’s my personal advice: start tiny. Whatever you think is a small project, make it even smaller. Aim for something you think would take a week, it’ll probably take a month. But you’ll actually finish it!

I’ve seen this pattern over and over, and honestly, even experienced devs underestimate how long things take, myself included! Scope management is a super tricky subject.

When you try to make your first game as a small team or a solo dev, it’s tempting to aim high, but it’s simply impossible to reach AAA scale on your own. Most beginners start way too big, get overwhelmed, and quit.

Here’s the problem: when you’re starting out, your main reference points are the gigantic, polished games you love, likely something like GTA, Assassin’s Creed, or any epic from the AAA space. But those games are made by teams of hundreds (sometimes thousands!) of pros working together for years.

Why You Struggle to Finish Games, And Why It’s Not Your Fault!

If you’ve ever tried to make your own game and quit, I’ve got good news: you’re not lazy and you don’t suck. The main reason so many developers, especially beginners, struggle isn’t motivation or skill. It’s scope.

For Tutorials I still want to continue writing the entire script beforehand to make sure I'm teaching everything perfectly and don't forget anything, but for more general talking videos this process is much better!

Normally I write every single word that comes out of my mouth, which means it takes a ton of work to make even a simple video. Gaining this skill means I can cover more topics without burning out.
