16.01.2025 17:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 01/ The 99 B-Line is the busiest bus route in North America, but bus lane hours donβt meet the needs of riders. Vision Zero Vancouver is supporting Movement's call to the @CityofVancouver to extend the Broadway bus lane hours to 7 AMβ7 PM, 7 days a week [β¦]

Councillor Betty Forbes last month: "we don't need to go for the gold standard of road safety" in the District of North Vancouver.
Today, a 16-year-old girl is dead.

@felix Unfortunately enforcement isn't effective after engineers design unsafe environment.
18.12.2024 17:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A screenshot of Google Maps Street View of the intersection of Canada Way and Burris in Burnaby, showing a pedestrian waiting on a refuge island, 6 lanes of traffic on Canada Way, and a slip lane on Burris.
Canada Way & Burris is a nightmare for pedestrians: a massive 5-lane crossing, complete with a slip lane that encourages fast turns. Itβs built for speed, not safety. Pedestrians shouldnβt have to navigate such dangerous infrastructure just to cross the street. We need change. 3/
18.12.2024 16:41 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0The conflict created by drivers turning left while pedestrians have the walk signal is a leading cause of pedestrian injuries & deaths. Fully separated signals prevent this conflict & saves lives. This is standard elsewhere in the world & could be implemented almost overnight. 2/
18.12.2024 16:41 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Another pedestrian was hit by a driver last night, this time in Burnaby. The person was crossing at a crosswalk with the walk signal, & was hit by a driver turning left. Most of the drivers who witnessed the crash drove away instead of helping. 1/ [β¦]
18.12.2024 16:41 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 1 π 05/ We call on @mikefarnworthbc and the BC government to:
-Reduce default residential speed limits to 30 km/h.
-Support municipalities with funding for speed management infrastructure.
-Prioritize safety over convenience.
Join us in demanding safer streets for all.
4/ Speed doesnβt just increase the severity of crashesβit also increases stopping distances and makes drivers less able to avoid collisions.
Letβs make our neighbourhoods safer for kids walking to school, seniors crossing streets, and everyone in between.
3/ Cities across Canada are taking steps to lower residential speed limits in. Why aren't more BC cities doing so? In part because the province requires municipalities to jump through hoops, lowering speed limits street by street. The province needs to act to protect everyone.
17.12.2024 16:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 02/ Lowering residential speed limits to 30 km/h reduces the likelihood of fatal crashes, especially for people walking or biking.
At 30 km/h, a pedestrian's risk of death in a collision is just 10%. At 50 km/h, it's 80%. A small change in speed = a huge difference in safety.
1/ A new ResearchC0 survey shows that 72% of British Columbians support lowering speed limits to 30 km/h on residential streets.
The evidence is clear: slower speeds save lives...and they're popular, too! It's time for the BC government to act.

How many more people need to be injured or killed before safety improvements are prioritized? Dangerous intersections like Broadway & Victoria demand urgent action, not years of delay. Lives are at stake. Safety--not driver convenience--must become the City's top priority. 4/

Luckily, the City recognized the danger of this intersection and planned a signal a block away at Victoria & 10th, which would help some cyclists avoid it. This improvement was set for completion in 2020. Construction is only now startingβat the tail end of 2024. 3/

A view of Broadway looking East, showing 7 lanes of traffic and a car blocking the bike box.
This is how the intersection looks: 7 lanes of vehicle traffic on Broadway, a painted bike box constantly blocked by drivers ignoring the stop line, a faded green bike crossing. For cyclists crossing Broadway N to S, it's even worse: a midblock, fully unprotected crossing. 2/
16.12.2024 04:23 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A photo of the aftermath of a crash at the corner of Victoria and Broadway in Victoria, where a cyclist was hit by a driver. The photo is out of focus so it's hard to tell what's happening, but there is a group of emergency responders clustered around someone on the ground, in the northwest corner of the intersection
Ten days after a driver killed a cyclist in East Vancouver, another cyclist was hit & injured today at Broadway & Victoria, on one of the busiest bike routes in the city. This intersection has had 154 crashes in the past 5 years, including 6 with cyclists & 2 with pedestrians. 1/
