We must study this and publish it in "Journal of Journals of Linguistics"

Let's make journals that are only distinct from previous journals by the capitalization!

There's a journal called "Linguistics", which is different from the journal "Journal of Linguistics". There's also the journal "Language" which is different from the journal "Languages". Obviously we need to establish the "Journal of Language" and "Journal of Languages" to finish this mess. 🐦🐦

Praat easily lets you remove sound, but not without messing up your annotations... I wish it was simple to just replace it with silence instead of complete removal 😭

You can't convince me that these are the real names of the authors of this study. Harder & Kock (1976) isn't real.

From around late July 2025, Urban Dictionary no longer shows an upvote/downvote count. Nobody knows why. It might just be a bug, or it may have been intentional.

The missing counts make the site unusable for slang researchers like me :-(

Your Wrong

Are you teaching prescriptivism this year? If so, please consider introducing your students to YourWrong.co.uk. It could form part of a seminar activity or prep! I'd also be very happy to provide some corpus examples for a small analysis task. Just get in touch!

Do you know any good texts/quotes on conceptualizations of "language" or other notions somewhat related to #linguistics? Or any other kind of ideas/material to inspire teaching a class about Conversation Analysis/Interactional Linguistics in a "language theory" course #emca 🐦🐦

The alternate spelling <pive> of the #Danish verb otherwise spelt <pibe> 'squak, whine' was added to the orthograpic dictionary last year. This better reflects common pronunciation. I'm not sure there are other <b>=[w] words that have both spellings? 🐦🐦

First article of my PhD is published!

It examines how midwives raise the topic of violence in antenatal care. Using CA of 35 consultations, we show that asking about violence involves subtle, interactional work - not just delivering a question.
