Today's Supreme Court decision is deeply disappointing, handing a disturbing victory to Donald Trump and Texas Republicans who would rather rig our democracy than compete in it. Despite a federal court finding that Texas' mid-decade redistricting efforts relied on unconstitutional racial gerrymandering, the Supreme Court chose to silence communities of color that fought for generations to be heard, all so Donald Trump can protect his House Majority.

This is not about representation. It is about power. And it's about a Republican Party that is so afraid of a real, functioning democracy, that it is choosing to dismantle it piece by piece. Despite today's outcome, I want Texans to know that their voices matter. But this means we have to work harder than ever to give power back to the people. Generations before us fought for what Republicans are now taking away, and we must follow in the freedom fighters' trailblazing footsteps - organizing all the way to the ballot box to achieve the fair representation that every Texan deserves.

And rather than protecting Texans, Greg Abbott is giving Trump whatever he wants -including five more Republican seats in Texas to make up for electoral losses elsewhere. Make no mistake: Republicans are doing everything they can to avoid accountability for the harm they cause. I’m deeply grateful to the El Pasoans who spoke out, testified, and voiced their strong opposition to the original El Paso map, including veterans, members of City Council and Commissioners Court, and the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce. I especially thank County Judge Ricardo Samaniego, who flew to Austin to be our voice before the redistricting committee. Although the newly gerrymandered map has now passed the Texas Legislature and been signed by the Governor, this fight isn’t over. Democrats will sue, and the courts will have the final say. I’ll reserve my full remarks for the conclusion of this Trump-driven process.
