Created for France by Nicholas Price and Americanised in 1988, Joe epitomised the "cool" lifestyle promoted by tobacco companies. His posters' attractive nature influenced a major uptick in youth smoking, raising further questions about the ethics of cigarette advertising.

Joe's success stemmed through print advertising and merchandise - the latter of which broadened his appeal to children - but was never seen in motion due to the ban on tobacco advertising for television and US theatres. Unless you count this 3-second winking poster that was seen in European cinemas:

T.J., as you seem to like her, was proposed as a love interest for Joe. Test audiences were not ready for her, as the idea of giving the lone wolf Joe a romantic partner struck them as distracting when he already had the Hard Pack by his side. She went unseen until the 1998 release of Joe's artbook.
